Ways to Avoid College Burnout
When you are in your last year of college, it's common to start feeling all around just bleh. You may feel like you have been climbing up a down escalator for 16 years, and you are starting to slow down and trip over your own feet. You may feel like you need more caffeine to stay away, and yet you are still sleeping more. You may find yourself turning in half-a** assignments last minute.
The struggle is real... you are not alone.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), 85% of college students report feeling overwhelmed by everything they had to do at some point in the past year.
After struggling through this myself, I have found some ways that help me deal.
1) Say “No.”
In your last year of college, you may feel like you need to volunteer, research, be in clubs, hold a leadership position, party with your friends, and maintain your grades. This can and will easily overwhelm you. It's okay to say no. I understand that resume building is important, but if you take on to much, your performance will suffer, and it will show. Take on only what you can handle, and don’t let yourself fall behind.
2) Take a day off.
This doesn’t mean binge an entire season on Netflix instead of doing your homework. Instead, put down the technology and do so self-care. Clean your house, cook a good meal, do your laundry, and exercise. Most importantly, get a good sleep. This is your day to destress in order to wake up the next day feeling refreshed and ready to go.
3) Organize!!
Creating an effective and manageable to-do list is a key way to help yourself stay on track. Being able to cross even the smallest of tasks off your list will help manage your stress. It's important not to put too much on you rlist, however, because seeing a lot on one page may overwhelm you.
