It was 2am when Sherlock strode into John’s bedroom and flicked on the light, and John threw his pillow at him hard enough to make him pause, silent, in the doorway, but not hard enough to make him go away. He moved again after a moment, much to John’s dismay, and came to sit on the edge of the bed. “John.” John rolled and pulled the other, smaller pillow over his head. The weight did not unsettle. Sherlock’s breathing continued, regular, in what had oh-so-recently been the dark. “John.” John kicked out. His foot connected with Sherlock’s leg, but other than a sharp intake of air, it did not seem to affect him. “John!” Sitting up was nightmarish and became more so when John caught sight of the clock; 2 am on a Tuesday, work in six hours, and Sherlock was sitting on his bed... God help him, Sherlock was sitting on his bed naked. He rubbed at his eyes and then directed them to the comforter. No use getting any ideas when he felt like he had been run over by a garbage truck. John wondered vaguely if he had been drinking the night before. It was all kind of-- Something flashed into his field of vision. John shut his eyes to block out what was likely a severed limb. “John,” repeated Sherlock, but more softly this time, “I found this in the living room.” More afraid than ever, John opened his eyes a crack and braced himself as well as he could for a foot or a dead child or some other horror. What he saw instead was a green, hardcover book, the spine broken, the corners worn, and the embossed title starting to fade. “It’s a book,” he noted. Sherlock shoved at his shoulder and John budged over; he handed over the book. “Will you read to me?” Suddenly it didn’t matter that Sherlock was naked or that it was 2am, because he was cuddled close and the book in John’s hands had the feel of home. John cleared his throat and opened the book. “"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...”
