Bhutan is full of wonderful handicrafts, you will be able to see items made from bamboo, wood and silver. Something that we at Colouricious Holidays love, is the fabulous fabric and tantalising textiles, all of which are hand-made in Bhutan.
Generally speaking, you can haggle the price down. We find the prices are very reasonable as they are. For this reason, we do not encourage our guests to bargain as this is not a custom.
In Thimphu, there are lots of craft shops. In other areas in Bhutan, the crafts are purchased at the local market or directly from the maker. We find particularly exciting! One word of advice, when you see something you love, buy it there and then as most shops do not keep excess stock. You may not see it again. Do not lose out!
Handwoven fabrics are the absolute pride and joy of Bhutan and many pieces that you buy become a collectors item. You cannot buy fabric by the metre or the yard, you have to buy the entire item. Plain cotton is the cheapest of the fabrics. Silk, which is also grown locally, is the most expensive. Different fabrics are used for varying purposes such as a belt is made of a different fabric to the scarves and bags.
We found a wonderful handicraft emporium which sold raw silk in natural colours and also in dyed maroon, orange and dark blue. You can imagine what fun you could have with this wonderful shopping spree in a textile shop within the beautiful Bhutan!
Paper was also very popular with our group. Paper-making is a handmade craft and is often created using bark from wood. It is excellent for painting and calligraphy and gift-wrapping.
