I was never head-over-heels with French but it came to be my comfort language because I don't have to worry about the way I pronounce my r's when I speak it.
I remember in middle school my French teacher saw how insecure I was with my rhotacism and she had the entire class trying to pronounce r the same way I did, then smiled at me, "See? They struggle to pronounce it your way just like you've been struggling to pronounce it their way. There's nothing wrong with your pronunciation, it's just a bit more special." I felt so damn appreciated in that moment that I said "Screw it, imma learn French."
The Languages Between Us Are Never Neutral!
We like to believe language is a tool. Neutral.Functional.Harmless. It isn’t. Language always leans somewhere. The Myth of “Just Talking” No one ever just talks. Every sentence carries:intent, position, power,or care. Even silence speaks a dialect. The Languages We Switch Without Noticing We don’t speak one language. We switch. At work, we speak parliamentary languagemeasured, indirect,…
To those who are multilingual:
Do you also have a "comfort language"? Like for me, even though German is my native language, I am often much more comfortable talking in English.
Je n'ai pas pratiqué le français depuis longtemps :')
Comfort language?
Just a random thought😅
I don’t know if anyone else has it or it’s just me🤷♀️
Like I associate languages with feelings I guess -Hungarian kinda stressful/nervous, English comfy/makes me feel more brave when speaking
