The term "glamping" has been around for 20 years, but there is still a lot of confusion around this accomodation style. People ask us, "Isn't that just like camping with a nicer tent or RVing bougie style? No. It's like this dreamy experience we just had at @BOSKO

Sitting at the foot of a monolith rising from an emerald lake, with 18th-century houses painted in a fiesta of colors and rickshaws putt-putting up the cobblestone streets, Guatapé village is a Colombian fairytale. With romantic getaway written all over it, the shoreline is dotted with glamping camps…but none more fabulous than @Bosko_Guatape! Bosko has become a media and travel awards darling, from World Luxury Hotel Awards’ “Best Tented Camp in South America" to Condé Nast Johanssen’s “Best Dining Experience in Central & South America,” so we had to check it out for our new ComfortablyWild book on “The World’s Best Glamping Destinations.” Not to mention, we love that Bosko is locally owned by four siblings and built with sustainability at its core. Arriving to Bosko’s mountain ridge, we were surrounded by views of the towering El Peñol rock and the expansive lake. A welcome ritual of herbal tea and a cacao-and-salt hand cleansing set the tone for this tranquil 10-room oasis. Our host escorted us down the winding forest path to our stilted suite. A sweeping canopy roof covered our open-air bedroom and patio, with an infinity pool that seamlessly extended the lake view. The breezy bathroom was full of tropical plants, making it feel like showering in a rainforest waterfall. When it came to dining, we could order room service in a floating basket for our plunge pool or enjoy a six-course tasting menu in their dining room meets greenhouse. Chickpeas cooked in mango and tomato confit, with mushrooms and cauliflower with panela teriyaki, was not what we expected after weeks of eating empanadas in Colombia, and we were more than pleasantly surprised. Come nightfall, the bonfire was lit, and so were the hundreds of zig-zagging stairs up to the top of El Peñol. Everything about this place was magical and a perfect finale to our four months in South America.

Ever since The Pinecone opened in 2018, we’ve dreamt of staying in this O2 Treehouse. A cutting-edge and utterly stunning design that shattered the convention of what a glamping structure could be, it is world-famous. Though, when you’ve seen a place in photos so many times, you have to wonder, “What would it really be like to stay here?…" Our GPS coordinates took us along the switchbacks of the Santa Cruz Mountains until we reached an unmarked gate. The @o2_treehouse host was waiting to lead us to the Pinecone’s secret location. Going deeper into the redwoods, it appeared…a larger-than-life seedpod, with diamond-shaped panels of glass and steel, dangling 50 feet above the forest floor. We gasped with glee. She gave us a briefing about this unconventional vacation rental and asked. “Do you have your backpack ready? You’re going to need your hands free for the ascent.” We gripped the railing of this steep ladder and climbed up the rungs. As we approached the Pinecone’s hidden hatch, we realized the last stair didn’t connect to the structure. Supported by cables and the strength of five redwoods, the room is designed to move with the trees. The gap was only about 10 inches, but seeing the forest floor between my feet and my destination, it seemed like quite the leap. I gingerly stepped across the ether and peered my head into the room. The light beamed through the dozens of crystaline windows…it felt like a cathedral to Mother Nature. The space was just 14 feet in diameter, but with 360-degree views and a bed as a viewing platform, it was all we needed. Mike lay on his back, and I curled up to his chest. We watched a squirrel scurry up a neighboring tree, and a bird fly by at eye level. We heard the wind whisper through the leaves and felt the trees rocking us ever so slightly. We weren’t just guests in a room; we were part of an ecosystem. If you want a hotel that pampers you, this isn’t it. If you want an experience that makes you feel alive, at one with nature, and at a new frontier in art and architecture, you’ll find it at The Pinecone.

Since embarking on our book assignment for The World's Best Glamping Destinations, we've traveled from Sweden to South Africa and reviewed 15 eco-resorts! It took copious amounts of research to pinpoint the properties that hit our criteria—creative accommodations, immersion in nature, sustainable practices, experiential dining, uncommon adventures, inspiring proprietors (to name a few)—and we are so thrilled with what we found! This global glamping journey reminded us how proud we are to be part of the outdoor hospitality industry. As Sarah Dusek, one of the glamping pioneers and founder of Few & Far, said to us, “We desire not just to create access to extraordinary places in nature, or simply be sustainable, but to be regenerative. And by that, I mean creating impact, moving the needle, solving some big world problems.” From ecosystem restoration to community development, glamping can be a catalyst for positive change. We have stayed in all sorts of glamping tents over the years, but haven't seen anything quite like YALA. They call them canvas lodges because they are multi-room, even multi-story, have proper kitchens, luxe bathrooms, and huge decks that connect the living area to the great outdoors. We just stayed in six camps around The Netherlands and loved how their tents adapted to each landscape...built into the cliffside, floating over a lake, or nestled in the trees.
