Help! Writing characters w/ different backgrounds

I have taken up a on a project that I have had lying around for years, but now I really wanna do something REAL about it, but I need some help. When I was a very young I once made a comic book for a friend of mine. At the time it was about 30-50 pages when I finished it, but I had this whole storyline in my head that I wasn´t skilled enough to make into something real. I still don´t feel skilled enough, but I wanna give it a try anyway and see where it leads me! The thing is, originally all the characters were typical anime characters with japanese names, but as I am remodelling the story I really wanna add more diverese characters to get more representation and in my opinion something more real that will be a lot more interesting than a bunch of white clones with no personality and the same face (I was so skilled as a child haha =_=). I am really unsure how to do this though, and even if it is OK for me to do this as a white person myself! One of the main characters I really want to make with some kind of african american heritage, but I don´t know how to write a character like that, so I was wondering if any of you have any tips on how I can make a character like that one of my mains without misrepresenting or offending someone. What is a good way to portray this person? I´d love some concrete tips or even links to resources that is trustable if anyone has anything like that!
