actually jsyk genie is still alive. she made a lot of progress in the first few years after she was rescued and at one point knew over a hundred words. shes a ward of the state now but lives in a home for underdeveloped adults.
Well I knew the first part because the mother then took her back and everything she learned regressed and the investigator that had taught her everything really wanted to keep her. The mom really couldn’t take care of her either and pretty much barred all investigators from keeping in touch with Genie, except for one investigator which I think was the same lady who took care of her those first few years and taught her everything. But after she went back to her mother and they couldn’t keep in touch with Genie and so that was the last of the information I knew about her. I assumed she passed away and relatively young (30s-40s) because most cases of feral children don’t continue to develop past that and have reduced quality of life. But if she became ward of the state, especially California, then that makes sense that she’s doing alright. As for the words she learned, you’re right she did learn that much but again it was only limited to those words. There were times where she could form very coherent yet broken sentences but that’s really as far as she could go. Once you reach that prime age where you’re suppose to learn language and you haven’t had any exposure to language, your ability to acquire a language and communication skills severely decrease. I mean they found her when she was 13! That’s crazy. Some cases of feral children they were able to find them at younger ages and make further progress and some cases of babies and toddlers who were neglected that were found had a reversal of the damage done, to a certain degree. But unfortunately that wasn’t the case with Genie.
But thank you commanderballsshepard for the correction on saying she was dead. This was a few years ago and someone had asked the professor what had happened to her but the professor honestly didn’t know if she was still around at the time. So I think my mistake was confusing her with another case we looked at that of a boy that did die relatively young after being found. I wonder how much or if she can still talk, I know she was taught some signing but the verbal communication couldn’t have progressed so well after being put into foster care.
