The fact that both series pull out deus ex machinas actually makes sense seeing as deus ex machina originally was legitmately Dinoysus coming onto the stage to save the protagonists. So it's the world or spirits coming to restore order because everything has gone out or wack by that point that even the heroes can't fix it.

The LOK finale isn’t a deus ex machinas I don’t think but, that’s an interesting take on things anon. That makes the lion turtle a very literal deus ex machinas then: a being that comes to help spur the hero on his path seemingly out of nowhere.

The lion turtle might be bit of an ex machina, but not a thematic one, so I have no problems there. But I can't quite explain how/why it came to assist Aang, any thoughts?

Yeah...I got nothing. 

Some spiritual stuf, maybe?

In chinese mythology the motif of a dragon turtle with the world on its back appears. It is a link between the celestial animals and the physical world, much like the avatar. So if the two are so similar it may be that Aang’s spiritual confusion and looking for guidance called to it.

I took it as the world just got so out of balance that there was no other way to set things right
