Idia, Jack, Ortho and Ruggie 1 (stringyworm)
Summary: It's your birthday and you're face to face with a giant cake. Of course, things can't be calm while you're waiting with Crowley for the rest of the guests to arrive.
(Word Count: 875. Happy Birthday to you!)
You did not plan for a party. Honestly, you were more than content to just let the day pass by, letting in guests to leave behind their gifts, but of course it wouldn’t end that way.
It’s your own fault for thinking that your birthday would be just another day.
“That is,” you craned your neck up, trying to count the amount of candles within the multi-layered cake, “a very huge cake. And I’m pretty sure there are too many candles. I’m not over eighty yet.”
Nearly touches the ceiling. How did Crowley even get it in here while you were in the backyard?
Crowley popped up from behind the tower of cake, hat replaced with a cone hat covered in glitter and overly long streamers, “Would I dare to settle for a dinky cake?”
You huffed, leaning back against the chair Crowley insisted you sit on. “Modest was never your style.”
Just as you began to tilt your head back to rest it against the seat, you felt your neck press against two objects stuffed inside hood of your sweater. Two distinct squeaks of shock had you shooting right up.
“Huh?” You reached behind you, trying to fish out whoever sneaked their way inside your clothes, but the little criminals flew out and floated right in front of your face. “Oh, it’s you two.”
Idia and Ortho. The younger will-o’-the-wisp looked rather guilty, the bigger one just looked miffed. Hey, you didn’t exactly expect the two of them to be napping in your hood. Not your fault you lightly squished them.
“Don’t do that next time. I might nap on you by accident.” You poked their bellies, Ortho giving a wispy laugh while Idia tried his best to dodge, to no avail.
“Oh, what perfect timing!” The wisps flinched at the loud clap Crowley made. “While I can do it with just a flick of a finger, I shall extend my graciousness and have these two pets light up the candles for me!”
“Really?” Not even on your birthday will he let an opportunity to be lazy slide.
“Yes, really!” Absolutely shameless, this man. “Wouldn’t it be fun for them?”
You would’ve shut him down if it weren’t for the fact that Idia and Ortho were slowly floating over to the unlit candles, their little hands reaching out as though to touch it, but kept themselves at bay. It only clicked into your head what those two were thinking when they both turned their gemstone eyes to each other, little flicks of red and pink entering their flame. If they had mouths, you knew they would be grinning.
“You know what,” you leaned back once more, making sure you had a good view of the competition about to start, “yeah, let them go a little crazy.”
And that was all you had to say. As soon as your lips closed, Idia and Ortho zipped in opposite directions, circling the huge cake as they lit up the candles with their blue flames. They weren’t wisps so much as they were blue comets, leaving behind phantom trails as they both raced each other to the top.
Unfortunately, you would not bear witness to who won, for your eye caught a little wind spirit sprinting right up the leg of the table. Instinct had you scrambling forward, lashing out your hand just in time to grab a salivating Ruggie.
“No buddy,” you said through clenched teeth as Ruggie turned to you with watery eyes and tiny whines. They did not work. “You wait like everyone else. Jack! Get in here!”
Ruggie is a hoarder. He will grab more cake than he will ever eat, hide it away, and it let it spoil because he didn’t eat it fast enough. Sure, he shares it, but this much cake would be too much for everyone.
Just as Ruggie let his form become the wind, a lightening fast trail of fog launched over your shoulder. Ruggie’s aim was thrown off course and right on the floor. Being intangible, they didn’t land with a splat, so no worries there. They became solid again, Ruggie lightly growling as he laid flat on his belly while Jack sat on his back, keeping him pinned with his weight as his tail whipped back and forth.
“Good boy,” you reached down, patting Jack on the head, his tail wagging faster.
Finally, there was a knock on the door. Idia and Ortho peeked over the edge of the cake, Ruggie and Jack’s ears perked up high. All of them turned towards the door.
“Oh, seems everyone’s finally here!” Crowley gathered more party hats under his arm, all of them varying in gaudiness. “Let me get the door!”
When you were sure Crowley was out of earshot, you reached over, grabbed the knife on the table and sliced a few small pieces. You know they won’t be missed. There is too much cake to go around, after all.
After putting them on a paper plate, you place two on the ground, the other on a chair close to you.
“Well?” You gestured with your hands, “Go on. Eat.”
All four of them launched themselves at the cake, not caring for the frosting getting caught on their limbs.
