MEET THE COMMITTEE: Anna Williams Oberlander
Anna Williams was born in Schroeppel, NY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Williams. Joshua Williams founded the Phoenix Register and Fulton Times. Anna taught at the Fulton Union School until her marriage to Alexander Oberlander, an attorney in Syracuse, in 1889. (Alexander Oberlander also published the Syracuse Union, a German newspaper, as well as owned Oberlander Press, a printing company.) Mrs. Oberlander was a charter member of the Syracuse Federation of Women's Clubs and served as its president for more that 20 years. In 1932, she was named "Syracuse's most useful citizen" by the First Baptist Church, the first woman so honored.
Anna Williams Oberlander passed away on October 16, 1947, at her home at 316 East Division Street. The following year, the Syracuse Federation of Women's Clubs began awarding the Oberlander Cup, given annually to a member club whose civic contributions are worthy of recognition.
MEET THE COMMITTEE: Wilbur Van Duyn
Wilbur Van Duyn was born on July 19, 1882 in Syracuse, son of Dr. John Van Duyn and Sarah Ann Faulks Van Duyn. After graduating from Princeton University, he earned his law degree at Syracuse University and opened his own law practice, later joining a partnership with Edgar Brown. The office of Brown & Van Duyn was located in the City Bank building.
An active Republican, Van Duyn became friends with Louis Will and served as the chairman of the legal committee of the Future Syracuse Committee. Other civic positions included president of the East Side Improvement Association, member of the Board of Managers of the Onondaga Sanatorium, the Onondaga Public Health Association, and a member of the New York State committee of tuberculosis and public health of the State Charities Aid Association.
Van Duyn was a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard. He also served for twelve years as the secretary and director of the CNY SPCA.
Wilbur Van Duyn died on February 3, 1930, at the age of 47 at his home at 228 Brattle Road.
