The First Texas Navy
The first Texas navy did indeed have a purpose. The navy was used to prevent a Mexican blockade of the Texas coast. Under the command of Commodore Charles Edward Hawkins, the navy seized dozens of Mexican fishing boats and sent their cargoes to the Texas volunteer army.
