In an ideal inductor, magnetic flux is fully contained in the coil core. In real production, however, winding gaps or incomplete wrapping cause leakage flux.
A common-mode choke has two windings separated by a certain distance, which creates leakage flux and forms differential-mode inductance. This helps it reduce differential-mode interference.
In filter applications, leakage inductance is often used as a design advantage. It can be used directly or increased intentionally to improve differential-mode noise suppression.
