Top 10 tips for salvaging a job interview that's swiftly going downhill
1. Apologize for your appearance. Be so obviously self-conscious about your bedhead and lack of makeup that it seems like you're joking
2. Feed the hiring manager a bonbon to distract him. Bonbons are all the rage now
3. Imitate the behavior of a dog whose food bowl has been forgotten
4. Apologize for your social ineptitude with a comically self-deprecating remark. "Sorry about the clown nose I'm wearing. It's just that I had to respond to all my invitations to the interview day with false identities, and I must have mistakenly created an account on Fiverr"
5. Come up with a variety of excuses about how your sleep schedule is all weird because of your therapy. Note: I don't know what this excuse is or how it would work, I just heard about it from a friend who got hired
6. Just go "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" loudly, repeatedly
7. Begin singing "Honey I'm Home" from Care Bears
8. [I've never had a job interview, or not that I can remember. Is this . . . normal?]
What is a book that is super meaningful for you/changed your perspective?
great question! it's hard to pick just one, but a recent one that really challenged & transformed me was My Year of Meats by Ruth Ozeki. something i grapple with a lot as a white, usamerican writer is the role of "agency" in literary narratives, both agency as it is hegemonically understood by the western literary elite, and agency in its plural & global forms. Ozeki's novel really brilliantly engages stereotypes around east Asian women & perceived "passivity," as well as what radicalism looks like for Madwomen experiencing domestic violence and rape. she also subverts white/western savior narratives without reifying very limited ideas of what freedom/autonomy are. i don't want to go deeper into this to avoid ruining the story for you, but i cannot recommend this novel highly enough both as a meditation on craft/philosophy AND as an intriguing story unto itself.
How many fingers does the human hand typically have?
I think I had something like 5 fingers when I was born? I don't know how many there are now, but they definitely aren't all the same length. (The thumb is most noticeably shorter.)
Top 10 things to do in a Denny's parking lot at 3 am
Make out with the boy I just met, watching the soft night, the city's pale lights straggling along the highway in front of us
Take really bad selfies of ourselves, using the nicest looking abandoned booth you can find
Help that kid who's crying and ask him if he's cold, and talk to him for a bit, and see if he'll calm down, and if he does, will he introduce me to his grandma?
Wear my lover's jacket, for the softness, and dance in the moonlight, while he sits in the back seat, humming a tune
Have a kid look at the bottle I found, the one with all the instructions, and tell us what it says -- a strange lullaby, as it is, as it seems, but still something it's hard not to like
Look back at my hands, bare and red, and decide to try this thing, try this thing out for once, with nothing to lose
Weep, again, and the tears rolling down my face again, because it's hard, hard to have that small, that intimate, that cruel, that hard in such a small place
At the end my sentence, "and in the end," and close my eyes, because I don't want to see the result
Did you get what you wanted for Christmas?
What I wanted for Christmas was a gift certificate to Amazon.com.
What does "LGBT" stand for?
It stands for "Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender"
It is a combination of the words "lesbian", "gay", and "bisexual" (they're three of the four letters in the word "LGBT"), plus "transgender" (a separate word and not an acronym).
Hey why are there federal agents at your door?
DON'T WORRY! They're just publicity agents for my self-published novel, My Favorite Year! (And they found me, all by themselves, without even knowing I had a novel! What a stroke of luck.)
