When rounding the house, Ava, once again, became highly aware of all their people could now be faced with. Were there really only five men to take out? Were there more of them waiting elsewhere? Who else knew about the community? Who of her people were out there screaming? Who of her people were dying?
The gun shots were echoing reminders that more of the war was being fought at the other side of the streets. There was nothing more that Ava could do. She needed to focus. She needed to help take these men out. She couldn’t let Elliot down. She couldn’t have these people die and be left alone again. Left to cart around one of the dead like a dog on a leash. Dirty. Alone.
Get it together.
Using the front porch of the home for coverage seemed like a good idea. Ava easily crawled forward and stayed flat on her stomach as she aimed at the men who were now but thirty feet away. Thinking she were covered well enough in the darkness of the hour, she laid low for a while, allowing Elliot to comfortably make a plan of his own. She didn’t know where he was now, or if any angle he held was more successful, all she could do was go with her gut, taking the moment when it was right.
It did seem so easy. There were three of them right before her.. Should she wait any longer? Ava would steady herself with a deep breath, but, as she was just about to shoot, she heard Elliot grunting, and punches landing. Knowing she couldn’t just barrel on out to the group she’d stay low and listen in. In their chatter Ava gathered they were looking for food, threatening a beating should he not comply. Of course, the man refused to give such information and with the sight of a gun in his face, Ava all but lost it.
“No! Stop it!” She’d run out, the sound of Elliot protesting her help falling on deaf ears as she tried to get to him.
Careless to her dangerous surroundings, Ava was punished for her heroism when a man reached from behind her to yank roughly at the gun on her back. A grunt would sound as she was slammed to the ground, all the air taken from her in the harsh fall.
Elliot stood upon his knees, watching helplessly as the girl threw herself towards him. Having been stripped of his weapons he knew not how yet to defend her. She had more weapons than him and now she had blown any chance at getting to use them. He didn’t dare criticize her now, but how could she be so careless? How could she just throw herself into harms way?
He shifted a bit, keeping an eye on her the best he could from his hostage position. “Ava?” His tone was a warning as he saw another man move in closer. He had no idea what kind of men these were, what they were truly capable of. But god help the person who tried to hurt her. Hostage or not, Elliot would do what he could to protect her.
His glance was taken from her as he spotted some dead attracted by the commotion, but he quickly returned it. “Ava.” He’d call louder as she began to sit up.
“Mm, Ava, huh? Trying to save him?” The men would laugh and Ava would spit at him. The move making Elliot smirk, until the man just spit right back. “You’re gonna regret that.” He’d turn to the another man, attempting to display dominance as he commanded: “Take her weapons from her.”
Ava would let the guns be shed, but as the man made a pass to stroke her down, she’d slap him with all the anger in her. “You fuckin’ bitch. Just don’t give up, do ya?” The nameless, yet angry man would echo the motion, and slap Ava across the face, making Elliot’s knees dig into the ground. He longed to stand up and fight. But, he was out numbered, out gunned, and Ava was still relatively okay. He would have to wait.
“You know, Walling said this would all be easy. He said no one here could fight, and that there were only two people we needed to kill to have it all.. So, you’re Ava.. That must make you Elliot.” The man would speak, clarifying that the two of them were who they sought. “Where is Walling? He should be here for this.”
“I shot him in the face.” Elliot would spit his words out, glad to say them all the more so now.
The enemy would laugh, nodding with what was obvious anger. “I’m definitely gonna kill you now.” His eyes were distracted by the dead that roamed closer still. “Actually.. I may not do anything to you at all..” The man would stomp away through the grass, fearlessly coming face to face with one of the dead, and dragging him in the direction of his hostage.
Elliot felt a fear spike through him, he had no idea how he was to get out of this.. He didn’t know what to do, or even what to say as his eyes found Ava’s.
Seeing the monster near the man that had protected her, sent Ava into a frenzy. She’d run forward only to be gripped up by another dirty stranger, whose hands held where they pleased as she screamed at the man who threatened Elliot.
“Don’t you fucking do it! I swear I will gut you. I will make you bleed!” Ava would shout out, but quickly after, could ignore her own mistreatment no longer as the groping got rougher. She’d turn in the arms of the large man and drop down, reaching to grip his cock as hard as her hand could squeeze. A great yell would sound from his mouth, his knee coming out to his defense and landing hard on Ava’s cheek.
A shot sounded out and before Ava knew where it came from, the large man was falling over her, pressing her down beneath him in a heavy lump. She’d push away roughly only to find he wasn’t fighting back. More shots began to sound and one by one the three men were taken out.
Releasing herself from the confines of the man, she noticed some of the community folk running near. She’d take some steady breaths as Gene went about, doing the duty of making sure each one was dead. It would be but one moment of relief before one of her men gave a small shout of shock. Ava neared, covering her mouth as she saw it.. A bite. A bite from the dead, taken from the wrist of none other than the one she was trying to protect.
The man couldn’t believe that this had happened. Elliot had done so much to stay safe, to stay careful, and to be a good leader. But of course, it would happen. It’s just what happened...
“Elliot!” Ava would fall to her knees as she looked to his wrist.
The pain was unlike anything else, but the man had only looked once, staying quiet as he had tied off his blood flow with the strap of a gun. If he kept his heart from beating too fast, he could slow the spread of the virus.
It didn’t help that Ava’s eyes were glistening in the dark, the wetness making them shine in a way he didn’t want to see. “Fuck, Elliot, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have ran out-”
“We have to cut it off.” Gene would speak openly, covering her messy words. “Now.”
The small group of people would chatter and bring forth a machete as Elliot watched in silence. He was comprehending the situation in stride with the rest of them, knowing it had to be done. They didn’t have a doctor, they were low on medication... But there was no other way to live.
“Ava.” Gene would speak out as he held the blade to her.
“I- I can-”
“Do it now or we won’t have sex for a month.” Elliot would find the capacity to tease, just wanting to get her to hear him. “Do it, Ava, please.. Now.”
Gene would all but lie over the man, as another member of the group held tight to his infected hand. “It’s not sharp, Elliot.. It’s going to take her a couple hacks..” The man would ball up Elliot’s shirt and stuff it in his mouth. Elliot didn’t know what to do but obey. The pain now was sharp yet throbbing and so much more intense than his shock was letting on. But how would he fair with the feeling of no hand?
No hand...
Ava had never felt worse in her life and she could only imagine how Elliot felt. She was bitter at the group, leaving her to be the one to do such a task. And yet, she couldn’t have watched it be anyone else. Wiping quickly at her eyes to rid her sight of tears, she’d lift the blade and hold his sight one more time. “I’m sorry.” The girl would give before lowering the blade down over him. She would scream out, but still try to remain as precise to her cut as she could as she brought forth another swing. “I’m so sorry, Elliot, I love you, I’m so sorry..” Her face covering in his blood as she heard Elliot screaming to the pain, his eyes fluttering shut as he began to pass out.
Ava would fear the look, scared for his life as she finished her horrible task and dropping the blood-soaked machete with defeat as she shouted words at him with a desperate need to keep him alive. “Elliot! Elliot, please!” She finally screamed past Gene who was tying up his arm better.
“He’s probably in shock. We have to get him inside and cauterize the wound.”
Ava would nod, but despite the rising sun, she knew that the area may still not be secure. “I.. I don’t know what to do.”
Gene, knowing just what she was thinking, nodded at her. “He’s gonna be knocked out for a bit.. There’s nothing you can do here.”
“But if he wakes up - “
“We’ll find you. Ava, you need to make sure the people are safe first.”
Ava would nod, wiping away at her cheeks as she realized she’d started crying again. “Yeah.. Yeah. I’ll go then. Tell him...” Ava didn’t know what to say, but Gene would shake his head.
“Ava, I think you already said it all out there..”
She wasn’t quite sure of what he’d meant, but the sound of another gunshot tore her away.
Elliot would wake with a searing pain. The groan coming involuntarily as he tried to move his arm. He could see the brightness of the day, though that didn’t quite help him gage how long he’d been asleep. Despite knowing just where the pain was coming from, he couldn’t bring himself to yet look at his injury. Instead, he’d rather focus on the girl that was sleeping in a nearby chair, here before him. The reason he was still alive. Sure, the rest of them would have stepped up to the challenge, but she had ultimately given her all to keep him here.
His affection for her showed as she slept, unaware to the gaze he was casting upon her. Though he was sure she wouldn’t mind. Given what she’d said to him and all. Part of him wondered if he had imagined it, but, zombie virus mixed with loss of blood couldn’t take the sound of those words from his head. They were scary and something he was unsure he could have dealt with had the world been the way it once was. As Ava opened her eyes now, Elliot began to wonder if it would really be so bad.
“Hey..” He’d give softly. Her features would twist to one of sadness, though he was sure he knew why.
“Fuck, I thought you’d never wake up. Elliot.. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have ran off that porch. I should have used my head, this is my fault.”
Elliot knew that it wasn’t like Ava to react the way she did, but it made sense with her confession. “What you said to me.. Did you mean that, or did you think I was going to die?”
Ava would look clueless for a moment, until it dawned on her. As if she’d forgotten. The girl would look nervous but nod. “I did. Both, but, I ...”
Elliot would give a light smile, though his stomach rocked with nerves he’d never experienced. “Ugh, this hurts like a bitch..” He’d change the subject and finally glance to his hand, or rather, his stub.
“Gene and I were planning a run. Going out to look for meds. Pain killers, more antibiotics..”
“Don’t..”
“Elliot.. It’s for you to-”
Then he would remember. “How is everyone? The walls..”
“They’re up. Elliot, you should know you’ve been out for about two days..”
The man would give a nod letting it all sink in and looking to her until his gaze turned soft.
Ava had almost forgotten the words she had spoke. But upon being reminded, her body hummed with an unknown feeling. Of course she had meant the words. In the short time, living in a fast paced and dangerous world, he had been such an amazing piece of what now kept her alove. A man she would have admired with or without the end of the world falling on them.
“Thanks for taking care of everything. As I assume you did.” He’d give.
She’d nod, glancing to his hand, or lack there of, and frowning again.
“Hey, I don’t blame you..”
Elliot’s words felt like a soothing balm over the pain she was experiencing on his behalf. But did she really deserve it?
“If you didn’t cut it off.. And you only wanted to keep me safe I.. I can’t judge how it happened. But I’m alive, the walls are up...”
Ava would nod and sigh out a shaking breath, tears threatening to make another appearance.
“You been home or anything?”
“I went to your place to shower..” She’d admit.
After a moment of silence, Elliot braved the words. “Could be our place.”
Ava would feel another wave of nerves. ″Really?”
“Gonna need a nurse now..” He’d lift up his stub, but wince, not admitting he had been wanting to ask her for some time now. “Might as well be a hot one.” Elliot would soften a bit, his stillness and tone conveying a deeper meaning to things that were going unsaid. “I think you should..”
“O-okay. I will. I mean, I owe you that much.” She’d give just the same.
It was a lot for the man to take in at once. Being in love, knowing of threats, losing a hand. But all he could do these days was take what he got. After being so close to death’s door, ready to almost give in, he had a bit of an appreciation for the moment he was having now. He had Ava, and it had cost a limb to stay with her. In some weird, twisted way, he could handle that. He could learn.
They had a long road a head of them, and he had no idea what to expect. Hunger, worry, death. No doubt of any of it. But what was important was having something worth fighting for. Now that, he had plenty of.
