1930s Jointed Betty Boop Fleischer Doll
I think we should start making composition dolls again and just... not cover them in lead paint this time. I mean, yeah, they're heavy compared to plastic baby dolls, but not so much so that a child couldn't still carry and play with it. They last generations and are sturdy as hell (I collect them). Plus they're made out of composition and cloth, not plastic, so they're almost certainly more sustainable than plastic baby dolls and we could use sustainable toys that aren't sad beige.
I went to a doll & toy show today in the small town of Belén, held at a historical hotel. It was a small show and there wasn’t a whole lot there, but I did get to admire some lovely antique dolls and browse the itty bitty dollhouse miniatures. I didn’t buy anything.
I also got to hear a presentation about the history of composition dolls. Composition is a mixture of sawdust, glue, and other binding materials. It was introduced into dollmaking in the late 19th century as an almost-unbreakable alternative to porcelain dolls. It was later replaced by plastic starting in the 1950′s. In the first picture, on the raised stage, you can see some of the presenter’s composition Patsy dolls from her childhood in the 1940′s.
