After three days offline, the popular gaming site said Sunday that it was back. In the meantime, children were freaking out.
This article covers the aftermath of a three day outage of the children’s gaming platform, Roblox. Both online and in real life, children were acting outside of their normal routines, causing parents much confusion until they realized the cause of it. Most importantly, children expressed fears about whether the site would ever come back up, and how they would connect with far flung friends without it.
This outage, and the feelings of the children experiencing it, brings to mind Wajcman’s explanation of how children use technology to bend space and time and maintain intimate connections with their friends. Playing Roblox differs from her exploration of how children and adolescents use mobile devices, in that typically children are not also experiencing family time or interaction with others off-screen when they are playing it. After a brief period of confusion and anxiety, the forced disconnect of the site going down led to children enacting more traditional play to pass the time, highlighting their adaptability to life without the technology.
