ok hi I’m watching story of kunning palace and I think that translating xie wei’s illness as ‘schizophrenia’ was a terrible translation choice because it seems to actually be a historical traditional chinese medicinal term that doesn’t concretely correspond with a specific modern diagnosis.
Basically it means ‘soul leaving syndrome’. It’s related to what seems to be dissociation, amnesia, multiple personalities, etc etc and while this site does say that the western equivalent is schizophrenia, that feels like an odd parallel to draw when it likely was something used to refer to many different conditions that would have distinct diagnoses today.

now if the original author was somehow writing this as schizophrenia but using this outdated term to make the story more historical then damn they were bad at writing schizophrenia. but I have no clue about that lmfao.
