Women contested the Olympic road race for the first at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Near the end of the 49-mile race, five cyclists made up the lead pack, including Americans Connie Carpenter-Phinney and Rebecca Twigg. With 200 meters to go, Twigg broke away, followed by Carpenter-Phinney, who caught her teammate just before the finish line. Carpenter-Phinney then "threw" her bike forward and won the gold medal by less than half a wheel. You can find more accounts of Olympic cycling duels over on NBC’s website.
