Prior to an exhibition game in Orlando, A’s manager Connie Mack (right), who is 84 years old, challenges Clark Griffith (left), the 78-year-old owner of the Senators, to a foot race from third base to home plate. The participants enter the Florida field in an ambulance before starting their race, which ends in a photo-finish tie.

After they retire today, Burt Shotton of the Dodgers and the A’s Connie Mack will become the last managers to wear street clothes. Although nothing specifically mandates a manager must wear a uniform, there is now a rule that states that a person not wearing a uniform, except medical personnel, isn’t allowed on the field of play during a game.
