𝚡𝚞𝚒 𝚝𝚊𝚗 𝚜𝚘𝚞𝚛: xui tan sour's fan toss is one of the prime reasons mai is a fan-geared character, as the concept of bladed weapons that are both stationary and mobile ( their fatal move is tossing their fans and slicing anyone in their path while almost looking like twin dragons coursing through the arena ... so badass ). 

  𝚛𝚎𝚝𝚜𝚞 𝚞𝚗𝚘𝚑𝚊𝚗𝚊: like unohana, mai's disposition is complex and two sided: on one hand, there is the pleasant, loving, and almost jolly character that friends get to see ... but on the inside, there is a boiling bloodlust that comes out at the worst of times. sometimes the two merge, which make for a bloodbath with a smile on their face. 

  𝚙𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚌𝚎𝚜𝚜 𝚔𝚒𝚝𝚊𝚗𝚊: a total fan favorite, kitana, like xui tan sour, is here for here war fans, as well as her awesome wind abilities ( her fan lift in the latest mortal kombat is just stellar by the way: very clever and coy for mai ).

  𝚔𝚊𝚛𝚊𝚔𝚞: a prime study in both mai's oni heritage and their pleasurable yet slightly dark disposition. like karaku, mai is often very relaxed and pleased about mostly anything, including a battle to the death. also, karaku's a wind demon so the cards really do match up here.

  𝚖𝚊𝚒 𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚛𝚊𝚗𝚞𝚒: the biggest inspiration and the reason for their namesake: they're both masters of the konuichi seduction style, only to mask their fighting prowess in battle. they've both got agile movement, swift attacks, and very jiggly assets ( though my mai wouldn't lust after andy ... they'd be much more interested in terry ~ ).

  𝚌𝚑𝚎𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚛𝚎: an example of when mai's more ... dark tendencies are exploited: if someone needs to be killed, assassinated, or just plain taken out, mai is more than happy to do it, and spares no expense to make sure that it's done. 

  𝚣𝚎𝚙𝚑𝚢𝚛𝚖𝚘𝚗: while mai doesn't have avian features like this beautiful digimon, they do have their wind abilities, using their fans to generate slicing winds and hurricane-level breezes when a fight calls for them. 

  𝚗𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚕 𝚝𝚞 𝚘𝚍𝚎𝚕𝚜𝚌𝚑𝚠𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚔: opposite of cheshire, nelliel represents mai's more jovial aspects and livelier personality, though also an instance where mai locks in for a fight and can get dead serious if the situation calls for it ( also ... tackle hugs ... lots of tackle hugs ... )

  𝚝𝚎𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚒: no, mai does not have the iconic giant folding fan yet, but temari's wind jutsus are a prime example of how mai's wind powers emulate, from there ability to create gigantic tornados that can suck in and slice anything, to causing humongous gale winds that batter or knock down anything in their path.

as someone with a career in public relations, forest has an image to maintain. his social media is closely monitored to ensure anything he posts is professional. his posts include fashion, history, art and humanitarian projects. thus far, he's maintained his page without scandal.

Conquer Prompt #3

The Raijin home is distinctive for it's muted colors, brutal angles, and hip roof, with inclusion of glass instead of delicate shoji to protect from torrential rain. The weather that hangs above shifts with Hugo's mood, the grounds often shrouded in dim darkness which gives an uninviting appearance. His furniture is low, central yard orderly with stone and plants, and the entrance is lined with red lanterns. He keeps an office to study and read in private. His kitchen is modern to assist in creating any dish he desires.

PROMPT: (SOME) CHARACTER INSPIRATIONS

:: SLEEPING BEAUTY (THE OG AKA THE FAIRYTALE)

The storybook version of Sleeping Beauty, the character, might not inform much of Nico's character at first glance, but what does do so is the motif of the hedge of thorns. The aesthetic of flowers being such a strong obstacle and threat that they protect an entire castle for a hundred years is quite an impactful image. And in some versions of the fairytale, only the princess's true love manages to make his way through the thorns. Not an obvious inspiration, but the aesthetic is there.

:: ROSAMUND DU PRIX (AKA SLEEPING BEAUTY - DIMENSION 20: NEVERAFTER)

This subversion of the fairytale highlights the parallels that can be drawn between Nico and Sleeping Beauty which might not have been obvious at first glance. Instead of waiting to be saved by true love's kiss, Rosamund has to learn to grow up and be strong for herself, finding strength in herself in the process. Nico as well had (and has) to learn to look not just for beauty in the world around him, but for his own abilities and talents.

:: POKÉMON (YOU KNOW... THE GRASS TYPES) ... AND ALSO DIGIMON

It's a bit silly and a bit obvious, but quite a clear mental connection. When it comes to using flowers , thorns and vines for magically attacking monsters, thinking of Vine Whip or Petal Dance is fairly obvious. Roserade, eat your heart out! Similarly, it might be just me, but I keep thinking about Rosemon, the literal Digimon representation of flowers, love and beauty - all sexy with a whip of thorns. That's what I imagine Nico to channel when he comes into his own with some more self-confidence.

:: MARY SUE (YOU KNOW... THE TROPE)

This one is, once again, more about the subversion of the idea rather than about a parallel to the character itself. Nico before the call was very much living the Mary Sue life. A sensitive but artistic softboi, sociable and bubbly, modest yet hardly facing any hardship. Wasn't life just beautiful? Of course he had to face the fact that Mary Sue's world is pure illusion, that the world is dangerous and flawed, and that there was darkness and danger he would have to face.

gloria delgado-pritchett: silvio is someone that has a lot of stories of growing up in his hometown and most of them are wild. when he first left venezuela, godspead was the only reason why he was comfortable because he used to only speak spanish. it was still hard shifting from culture to culture. he's proud of his latino roots and his family was very relationships-focused with a high sense of hiearchy. going from that to a task-focused group mindset has been a little hard. sabretooth: his divine mauling makes him look a little like sabretooth when it comes to the claws that he grows out. this is when he feel the need to really protect himself. he proves that he won't go down with a fight and it's up until life or death. catwoman: when it comes to his physical weapons and fighting style without powers, he resembles catwoman/selina kyle. someone that's quick on their feet, uses a whip to best their foes, and is pretty flexible even during combat. cheetah: someone that was highly intelligent and that's why she got into the mess that she did. often times it's hard to mix the beast within and the human that you are. if he gives too much into his animal mimicry, he tends to get a little bit too wild and forget common decency/manners. vixen: when animal mimicry isn't physical, when he's using the soul warriors, they come out the same way as vixen's powers. he tends to summon these from different areas on the grounds and have them attack his opponent. he also feels highly connected to them, being able to gain an eagle's eyesight while not fighting. cisco ramon: one thing about silvio is that he's never going to lose his optimistic view on life. whether it's because he's trying to honor silvana or just because he's like that naturally, it's always going to be a part of him. he'd much rather look at the glass half full than even begin to think it could be half empty.

PROMPT 001 INSPIRATIONS

doom, disaster, fighting the inevitable & the 'cruel' hand of fate. shrouded in mystery, the inspiration for dev is moros and all the aspects doom might take. stand in the precipice of chaos and what is left? a demigod who looks forward to see only death and decay, a god who foretells only demise...

(blood mage) hawke: badass aesthetics aside, hawke's fate is so intimately tied to his father from the start, on the run with his mother and siblings he witnesses destruction, abuse, death, makes a home for himself (spoilers) and watches it burn, possibly seen as cursed for being a mage... hawke is ultimately doomed by the narrative, something that fits dev very well.

cassandra of troy: in some myths, trojan princess or priestress, dedicated to apollo, fated by him to utter true prophecies but never to be believed. "in modern usage her name is employed as a rhetorical device to indicate a person whose accurate prophecies, generally of impending disaster, are not believed." dev's human father parallels this, always close to impeding doom, always warning, always writing about it... never heard. dev in turn, turns his eyes away, what good is warning if people won't listen? of course, things might be different when he starts actually seeing the future (but only the disasters)

stewy hosseini: rich, ironic, cynical. smart and playing the game, always trying to get one up over others. while dev isn't as cynical, cutthroat or involved with the 1% he is smart enough to game the system and live comfortably. he knows the cost of this, he knows the people he rubs elbows with would watch the world burn and burn themselves with it for more money, but he is not the kind to sacrifice himself for ideals and no results. (+ could include, Sloan Sabbith from the newsroom, brilliant economist and much more, much less shady)

cable, aka nathan summers: again, doomed by the narrative somewhat, sent to the future to survive, sent back in time to stop apocalypse... witness to terrible events past and future. often unable to help. time travel aside, dev has also seen enough tragedies he could do nothing about, and now that he might be able to... will he succed? personality wise both are very marked by the things that haunt them.

general  areas:  the  entrance  and  some  of  the  other  rooms  have  an  ornate  stained  glass  window.  aside  from  that,  it's  a  pretty  quaint  but  comfortable  abode.  the  walls  are  all  white  and  the  decorations,  for  the  most  part,  are  gold  or  marble.  he  enjoys  uniformity.  the  kitchen  has  a  small  island  and  on  top,  a  small  plant  as  well.

bathroom:  has  all  of  the  essentials  that  you  would  need.  a  simple  tub,  a  sink,  a  mirror,  and  a  toilet.  everything  is  tucked  away  under  the  sink,  either  in  the  large  cabinet  or  in  the  small  drawers.  the  shower  doors  are  glass  and  there's  another  mirror  in  there.  it  can  get  quite  steamy  since  he  prefers  hot  showers  above  all  else.

bedroom:  the  bed  frame  is  described  as  champagne,  at  least  in  the  catalog  that  it  was  picked  from.  the  sheets  are  all  white  and  soft.  the  pillows  are  all  satin  because  he  feels  like  it  would  be  the  best  to  not  get  any  oils  on  his  face.  a  small  lamp  and  vase  are  on  his  nightstand  at  all  times  with  a  rosary  hanging  from  them.

extra  details:  apparently  he  is  very  big  on  reflections  (his  own  and  of  others)  because  there's  a  lot  of  mirrors  around.  he  also  has  a  lot  of  white  anointed  candles,  depictions  of  both  xōchiquetzal  &  the  virgin  mary,  and  flowers.  the  place  feels  extremely  clean.  both  in  the  physical  and  spiritual  sense.  he  wouldn't  have  it  any  other  way.

valentin:  being  queer  in  some  latin  households  isn't  always  the  easiest  thing  to  come  to  terms  with.  he  often  times  felt  like  he  had  to  hide  a  part  of  himself  away.  maybe  that  was  why  he  chose  priesthood.  when  he  did  come  out,  thanks  to  some  friends  in  college,  he  ended  up  giving  a  big  fuck  you  to  some  of  his  less  accepting  family  members.

piper:  finding  out  that  he  was  a  half  god  while  also  living  most  of  his  life  as  a  priest  was  daunting  to  say  the  least.  there  was  a  lot  of  catholic  guilt  associated  with  it.  wondering  if  he  would  get  struck  by  lightning  the  next  time  that  he  stepped  foot  in  church.  thankfully,  this  wasn't  the  case.  slowly,  he's  finding  a  way  to  mix  all  of  the  sides  of  himself.

susan:  when  it  came  to  his  family,  he  ended  up  taking  a  route  much  like  invisible  woman.  raising  a  younger  sibling,  in  his  case  two.  doing  anything  to  protect  them.  sometimes  having  to  be  the  harsher  one  to  set  the  rules.  he  was  mature  from  a  young  age.  that  often  times  meant  that  there  was  little  room  to  play,  instead  more  room  to  be  strict.

father  paul:  what  does  a  man  of  the  cloth  do  when  he's  faced  with  real  life  demons?  monsters  that  hide  under  people's  beds?  what  does  he  do  with  himself  when  he  realizes  he's  part  of  the  reason  that  they're  here?  there's  a  lot  of  self  reflection  that  comes  with  battling  these  creatures.  wondering  if  he  was  never  born,  if  they  would  be  here  still.

scott:  with  great  power  comes  great  responsibility.  this  connection  is  a  representation  of  the  fact  that  he  would  want  to  sacrifice  himself  if  it  meant  that  someone  he  loved  got  a  chance  to  live.  while  he's  not  necessarily  a  martyr  or  leader,  he  would  see  what  he  could  give  up  if  it  meant  letting  the  others  keep  everything.  he  always  wants  to  be  there  for  them.

gwen:  power  wise  this  is  one  of  the  people  where  inspiration  comes  from,  just  not  as  flashy.  he  is  smart  enough  to  use  his  force  field  constructs  in  creative  ways.  this  could  mean  blocking  attacks,  trying  to  make  steps  to  get  higher  up  somewhere,  or  simply  using  them  offensively.  also,  doing  a  lot  of  research  to  connect  with  his  other  side  and  use  that  to  charge  his  skillset.
