GPs all for medical fee hike

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8

While many members of the public have expressed dissatisfaction over the announcement by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam that medical and dental fees can be increased, general practitioners (GPs) interviewed by The Rakyat Post supported the decision.

A doctor practising in a private clinic in Sri Hartamas hailed the fee increase as he felt that doctors’ consultation fees should keep up with the times.

“Overheads (for operating a clinic) are rising. So consultation fee should reflect the increase as well. I think that consultation fee has to follow the market — if everything goes up, the fee has to as well.”

He felt that the public often forgot that doctors were consumers as well and were as much affected by the recent price hikes and subsidy rationalisation as others were.

He said: “The fees make up my income which enables me to feed my family and educate my children. Yes, we (doctors) are involved in a noble profession, but GPs, who own clinics are also running a business.”

The doctor added that some members of the public who complained about the increase in consultation fees were also those who did not mind spending a lot of money on food and entertainment.

He told The Rakyat Post that he might increase his consultation fee by around RM10.

“In my opinion, a GP cares more about his or her patients than making money. So my consultation fee will still be nominal, especially for my regular patients whom I have known for a long time.

“In the end, what matters most is maintaining a good patient-doctor relationship.”

Another GP with his own clinic in Damansara agreed that patients came first for many doctors.

“I think doctors are sensible. We will not increase the fees so drastically that it will burden patients.”

He said he would not increase the consultation fees, nor had he increased them for a long time.

“For close to 15 years, I have not raised my consultation fee. I do not think I will raise it now. My fee now is RM15 per consultation. I think hiking it to RM30 (which is the suggested amount) might be too high.”

He added that he would monitor what other clinics were charging first before deciding whether to increase his consultation fee.

The GP expressed his surprise at the media attention on the medical fee hike.

“I do not understand what the fuss is all about. When other professionals, such as lawyers or architects, raise their fees, there is no public outcry. Yet when doctors try to do it, everyone wants to have a beef with us.”

An inspection by The Rakyat Post revealed that many clinics located in the Klang Valley, such as the ones in the suburbs of Setiawangsa, Wangsa Maju, Damansara Heights and Sri Hartamas, have not increased their GP consultation fee.

Datuk S. Subramaniam announced that the increase in fees could not exceed 14.4% of the current medical and dental fees.
