Meet our newest Bubbly
Sunday is a sparkling wine kind of day, so meet our newest: Contadi Castaldi Franciacorta Brut Rosé.
Franciacorta is Italy's "champagne"; it is made in similar fashion (as is Spain's Cava), utilizing the méthode champenoise in which secondary fermentation occurs in-bottle. Italy's other sparkling wines, such as Prosecco, are generally made using the méthode charmat in which secondary fermentation occurs in bulk tanks. As a "fine" bubbly, I was first introduced to it in Garlenda, Italy at the wedding of my close friend, Andrea (right). While that wedding was in Liguria, Franciacorta is produced in eponymous territory in in the beautiful lakes region of Lombardy; there, it has DOCG classification.
The Franciacorta region is focused around the Lago d'Iseo, but my next encounter with it was next door on the shores of Lago di Garda (below).
An al fresco lunch in a picturesque piazza almost demands a bottle of wine and, with the Franciacorta still in mind, we settled on a Brut from Contadi Castaldi with an excellent flavor and a nice label:
I remembered that bottle and that label and was pleasantly surprised to see Contadi Castaldi available in Pennsylvania. We opted for the rosé, which has fine, long-lasting, ample bubbles. The wine is dry with hints of roses, small berries, and white pepper. Get it now at Jet for $11/glass - a steal for "champagne". Want more info? Listen here!
