A Thing About: Right Hand Man
Haha. That whole song is about Washington’s failed New York campaign. There’s a lot of historical things in this song I could talk about, however I don’t remember enough to about them at the moment to do that talking so here’s my favorite part of the song explained.
You know the whole “I scream in the face of this mass mutiny/ are these the men with which I am to defend America?”
That last part was something Washington supposedly actually said, in that part of that campaign. The mutiny he’s referring to in the former line is his troops abandonment of their posts as the British were tearing up the Contential Army in the Brooklyn Heights (at least I’m pretty sure that’s were it was). Anyway, they were fleeing and GWash was pissed. It was one if the only time he lost his temper. He threw away his hat, was waving deserters with his sword, and threatened to execute the runners. He even later made an example of one of them, arranging a public execution before having it called off at the last minute. In the midst of that, he supposedly yelled that. Is that cool or what.
GWash: You would lose your temper too if your “professional soldiers” all took off running in the midst of battle.
Martha Washington: Hush George.
