♱– With any and all caution cast to the wind and every warning unheeded, it was intensive research, assiduous planning and countless dead-end phone calls that had at last brought the determined paranormal enthusiast to what was arguably one of the most terrifying sites on earth. The brisk October winds sent shimmering gold strands and crisp autumn leaves carelessly about in every direction, but no earthly diversion could have separated the young man’s gaze from the fallen fortress towering over him. Once home to the most infamous family of assassins the world over, the brilliant mansion stood before him silent, vacant like the relic of an ancient past. The sun was setting in the distance and with every second that passed, the start of his investigation grew nearer and nearer. In anticipation, he gripped his satchel strap as if it were the only thing keeping him grounded to the material world.
Inhaling one last breath of fresh air, the determined blond unceremoniously stole his way inside. He could have been granted access by the king of the world and still he would have felt like an intruder here. His sensory faculties from head to toe had been perturbed from the moment he’d set eyes on the place but once inside, the anticipation he felt welling up inside him was nothing short of overpowering. Not even the fruitful investigations he’d experienced prior could compare to just how uneasy he felt within the grimly ornamented halls of this somber dwelling. Portraits and keepsakes of disturbing charm adorned every square foot of wall lining the elongated corridor feeding into the belly of the house, eyes falling upon the intruder with icy disdain from all directions. Abandoned sanatoriums, hospitals, prisons, he’d tasted all flavors of architecture and yet never once had he felt quite so intrusive. Rather, it equated to breaking into someone’s still very occupied household without permission.
As if things weren’t spine tingling enough, the gigantic front door slammed shut behind him. The investigator jumped, cursing himself for his own skittishness. The wind, obviously. The blond rolled his eyes in annoyance. It was suddenly a blessing to have been stripped of his entire crew who would have certainly noted his raddled behavior and panicked forthwith. Stripped wasn’t exactly the right word. They’d been snatched up by fright so powerful that they had simply refused to leave the bus terminal at the base of the mountain, leaving their captain to fend for himself. With the little daylight he had left, setup would surely be hasty without them. Very well, the time to get to work had come.
