Snow covered the ground and every other part of Launceston, the store fronts were decked out in Christmas decorations. A overly sized train ran in circles in the middle of the park, and people had started skating on the lake. The park had been started weeks ago and finally it appeared to be decked out in the winter wonderland, Faye had been going on and on about. That she had over seen some layouts, and Maya was glad she'd been pleased because now as she walked underneath it all. She figured the acting Mayor was nothing but proud.
Maya glanced over at Audrey as they continued into the park. The two had a small ritual they had started doing when Audrey first started dating Fran and even after the two parted, Maya and Audrey had opted to continue tradition. They'd come together exactly a week and half from Christmas which was also two days before the tree lighting. The two would walk around the park and then grab coco before going skating at the rink.
It never mattered how old they go as the years went on. What mattered had been it was their moments where nothing else mattered. They were just two friends who were catching up on life and enjoying themselves over coco and skating
"JJ is going to love seeing the Christmas tree lighting in the park." The smile on Audrey's face made it so Maya couldn't help but smile back. She loved JJ as well, how could she not being that Fran was her best friend.
"Make sure you call me when you bring him, so I can tag along. I wanna see his little face when they light it."
"Its a date. You're still coming to my house this year for Christmas right?"
Maya nodded her head the smile on her face widening before nudging Audreys shoulder with her own. Wouldn't be anywhere else."
"Good before I'd kick your ass if you didn't come. " Audrey pushed Maya before pointing to the vendor, the sound of Christmas music echoing from his small black radio hanging from his cart. "Lets grab coco, before I have to leave you for this meeting.
Her foot barely even managed to take a step towards the vendor when it started to ring. The whistling telling her that no one other then the man himself was calling. Nodding her head urging Audrey to go ahead she pulled her iPhone from her pocket, pulling her leather glove off with her teeth before sliding her thumb across the screen unlocking it.
"I need you to take care of something, find Reynolds, Alex not Marcus and bring him in."
"Whats up? No ones been able to find him for weeks."
Maya had seen it coming, the glimmer of the barrel of the gun off the warm rays of sunlight that was coming through the trees. She didn't even have to think as she turned quickly dropping her cell phone and sending it crashing down to earth and started running towards Audrey who was standing by the park benches. Her boots slapped against the snow sounding muffled giving Audrey no warning of what was to come. Maya's hands pushed Audrey roughly, her body shielding hers as they collapsed to the ground the cold snow unwelcoming. Some of it melting away as Audrey's coffee cup crashed down besides them.
They lay there for a moment in the snow for a moment, Maya's left hand clutched her gun rightly as she hoovered above Audrey. She turned quickly keeping Audrey behind her. Her eyes attempting to zero in on the man that she could barely hear thrashing through the forest getting away. There would be no way for her to return fire with out possibly injuring an innocent person. She spun around again and her right hand reaching down and patting her down not even caring if it was to close for comfort.
"Are you okay? Wee you shot. Audrey. Were you shot!"
Fear. It was written all over her face but Maya needed Audrey to pull herself together. She needed to get her out of here. Her eyes flashed up and caught sight of the coco cup with a perfectly sound hole in it. Not getting an answer out of Audrey, Maya pushed herself up and checked her over herself.
"You're fine. Take my keys, I'm going to go after him. Do not look back. Do not stop. You get to my car and you go to your father. You to the safest place you think of. Stop staring at me, there will be no arguing Fucking Go Now."
She pushed herself slowly off the ground before grabbing Audrey's hand and pulling her up. Using both of her hands to push her forward, Maya stood there and watched as she ran forward doing exactly what Maya had ordered.
She stumbled backwards when Audrey had finally disappeared in the direction of the parking lot. Pulling back her leather jacket to reveal a soaked crimson shirt. She took a few steps forward trying to make it towards the benches. When her world spun for a moment before she fell into the snow. Snow flakes landed on her face and melted on contact sliding away like the tears that weren't falling. Everything started to get numb as the pool of blood started to warm her side and collect in the snow besides her. Maya coughed blood sputtered from her mouth before releasing a long slow breath as her eyes fell shut.
