My family (and I) are religious and I know your not, but do you think you can practice tarot and be religious? I'm Christian by the way.
I know there are a lot of Christians today who don’t think you can, and often bring up quotes from Deuteronomy and stuff as justification, but eh, I’m not into that. Traditional tarot images are drenched with Judeo-Christian symbolism, so clearly there’s been a long-term connection between the two (I’m still learning about the history of tarot; it’s fascinating!).
I grew up a couple contradictory flavors of Protestant (Community of Christ/RLDS and Methodist), so tarot and divination and all that jazz wasn’t talked about or considered morally acceptable. Add that to my agnostic-atheism side, and you get someone who struggled with having an interest in doing tarot. Because reasons.
Also, I seriously enjoy the fact that I’m following a bunch of folks who ID as Christian (Catholic, Protestant, whatever) and also do tarot or witchcraft. I find it to be a wonderful combination of beliefs and practice and I learn so much from reading their posts.
So yes, I think you can be religious and practice tarot. IMO, as long as you’re into it, want to do it, and find meaning in it, you can practice tarot.
What do YOU think? I often find that when I ask a question like this, it’s because I’m curious or thoughtful about something and what to suss out other people’s thoughts before stating my own.
