SoCal getaway for the 4th weekend!

What's a girl to do with a long holiday weekend, the travel bug and some much-needed love from good friends? Go to Los Angeles, of course!

Thursday morning I used Zimride to carpool down to L.A. to stay with one of my best friends from Ithaca, who lives just outside the city in Redlands. Arriving to the city just around 3 p.m., we made it in time to snag a plate (or two) of 4th of July BBQ food, make some margaritas and watch a great fireworks show!

I also got to spend time with another close Ithaca friend who just moved to West Adams (and lives in an adorable house built in the early 1900's) to begin a specialized journalism masters program at USC. We hit the beach in Malibu and stopped at the waterfront restaurant Nobu, naively ordering sushi that cost each of us the equivalent of at least an entire month's worth of groceries. Only later did we discover Robert De Niro owns the place. Moral of the experience? YOLO.

On Friday, we went to Santa Monica to meet up with my cousin, who I haven't seen in seven years since our last family reunion in Ireland! We walked along the pier and Third St. promenade, then drove to The Grove and had an amazing lunch at the permanent Farmers' Market there.

Later that night, we went to Universal Studios and City Walk, drinking the night away with our VIP status at a bar called Howl At The Moon where we met up with more Ithakids. I reunited with two coopmates!! (Missing my roomies from last year...) Half price cocktails, dueling pianos, dancing on the stage, late-night food at Johnny Rockets capped off with starting a party on the dance floor at 1 a.m.

A weekend spent in the company of some of my best friends, getting to meet their families and friends, and exploring a new city was exactly what I needed to kick off the month and get me over the midsummer hump. Halfway through my incredible fellowship program (sadly), but halfway closer to reuniting with everyone for one final year in Ithaca!

making seitan is actually really easy! you just mix vital wheat gluten with your dry seasonings and then stir in like a really salty seasoned broth until it makes a hard stretchy brain-looking thing, and then you make little cutlets out of it, and then you boil those in more broth, and THEN you have to fry them to make it crispy on the outside. it doesn't really taste like meat but it's chewy and salty and full of protein! It's really great, you should try it. 

can anyone give me a ride to trader joe's?

yeah it's kind of weird at first but there are a few ways to put it in--you can fold it up, or there's like a thing where you make a cone...
