Cop Kid share Queer-self acceptance anthem ‘Gay’

Utah based duo Cop Kid share ‘Gay’, their latest single from upcoming EP Cop Kid Greatest Hits Vol.2 due July 21.

‘Gay’ is Cop Kid at their best, sentimental lyricism combining with glitchy-pop production, cut from the same musical cloth as contemporaries such as MGMT and Charli XCX but also have a unique charm and energy to them that sets them aside from the rest of the pack. This latest single is a deeply personal song for lead singer and songwriter Marny, that touches upon her experience of coming out to her religious family.

Speaking on the track, she adds “Growing up in an ultra-conservative, religious bubble with a close family dynamic amplified anything I did or felt that went against the norm, or against the religious and political beliefs that dominated the community. ‘Gay’ is the epitome of the anxiety-driven thought spirals regarding my queerness that have filled my mind from a pretty young age. I used the song to try and paint a portrait of some of the moments I remember feeling more self-aware about my own unhappiness, when I realized I couldn’t find a “reason” for why I was the way that I was. The narrative of a queer person overcoming harmful family and religious dynamics is one that’s been told again and again, but unfortunately it’s still very relevant, especially in places like Utah”.

Cop Kid share new single 'Reservoir Beach' 

Utah based duo Cop Kid share ‘Reservoir Beach’, the next track from an upcoming EP, that follows up from their previous single ‘Big World’. This also comes with the announcement that the duo will support Noah Cyrus at Ogden Twilight 2021.

‘Reservoir Beach’ is more of the duo’s bright and playful glitch-pop, riddled with Gen-Z lyricism of general anxiety. “We wrote this song about a reservoir that we both live by.” say the duo. “It’s the summer spot that you go to and hang around, getting high with your friends. Utah is land locked so this the closest thing we have to a beach. Anyone who lives by the ocean would laugh at it. It’s not a lake or much of a beach, but it’s the closest thing we have. The song is a catchy pop tune about losing track of yourself and time and getting into the loop of aimlessness. It’s like that movie Groundhog Day- everyday kind of starts to feel the same, but you don’t really mind it too much.”

‘Reservoir Beach’ continues Cop Kid’s rich tapestry of electro artpop, that trips between melancholia and optimism, with the mood shifted by either by a particularly emotive episode of Grey’s Anatomy, or the bittersweetness of falling in love, then broaching queer identity with parents, grandparents, and society in general.

Ten years later, I do the exact same thing, but the episodes aren't new anymore and it is now on Investigation Discovery. Learning about dead people is a childhood comfort of mine. I always considered the episodes to have happy endings, considering the killer always went to jail. I am such a cop kid.
