Journey to Ogasawara - Update
Just spent most of the day proof reading and rewriting parts of the book Journey to Ogasawara. For the first time I have the feeling that this book project is moving forward. It will be a welcome companion to the film "David Burliuk and the Japanese Avant-garde" which was the inspiration for the book itself. "Journey to Ogasawara" is an account of the making of the film "David Burliuk and the Japanese Avant-garde" which makes up one of the films in the series - The Russian Avant-garde - Revolution or Renaissance
Good day of proof reading and correction/editing of the book "Journey to Ogasawara". Some rewriting etc. http://journeytoogasawara.blogspot.com/
Japan and the Meaning of Landscape
The web doc series Japan Philosophical Landscapes is a continuing series of short films about Japanese culture understood through the prism of Japanese landscape. Land scape however in this instance is not a visual metaphor or a pleasurable visual panorama which induces specific emotions of wonder awe or reflection but a kind of metalanguage itself landscape exploring itself as landscape but also creating meaning beyond itself. In other words it imparts a meaning to the landscape other than its intrinsic or empirical existence Not that wonder or awe are excluded but rather the philosophical aspects of landscape will be explored and detailed and used to reflect on the "text" of landscape. In what way can landscape be text in what is semiotic value. The Japanese, in gardens for instance create a miniature abstract landscape and draw the background scenery outside the garden composition, for instance mountains and trees, to create further levels of depth and distance, complimenting and enhancing the composition of the garden itself. This breaking down of barriers or dissolving of borders between things is the essence of zen Buddhism a component part of Japanese culture.
Japan Philosophical Landscapes
Several weeks of editing and effects on the Phosphorescent Queen section of the web doc Japan- Philosophical Landscapes. This section of the series involves landscape of a more contemporary nature. Filmed mostly in on the streets of Tokyo and underground but also in other locations this partof the series will concentrate on contmporary landscape of Japan in a cultural context. As the film is still evolving its difficult to give any concrete information although here are some photographs which give a flavour of what is to come.
