Advice to future (fanfic) writers
As a (fanfic) writer myself, I've experienced a lot. I began writing fanfics when I was in sixth grade and have vastly improved since then, but still have a lot to learn. I just wanted to give out some advice since I haven't posted anything in a while.
Don't give yourself a deadline. I feel as if a deadline puts more pressure on a person and they rush through their work just to get it finished (which I've personally done) and the finished project isn't as good as you would want.
Read A LOT. This is pretty standard to becoming a writer. The more writing styles you introduce to yourself, the more you'll be able to use in your own writing. I personally really like the poetic styles of writing some fanfic writers have and I would love to be able to write like that some day.
Be open to constructive criticism. I have always had a problem with this, but I'm getting better at it. You aren't going to improve unless you let others try to help you. Of course there is a difference between constructive criticism and just being plain rude. You can always improve. There's no such thing as getting worse.
Take as much time as you need for yourself. If your mental, physical or emotional health is suffering, or if you're just busy, take some time to yourself. I suggest to not write at all unless you feel really inspired because it kind of puts a strain on your writing, if that makes sense.
Carry a notebook around everywhere. I personally don't follow this rule, but I've been meaning to. Inspiration comes from everywhere, so having a place to write down all of your ideas is great to have.
Pay attention to reactions in movies and shows. Emotions are probably the hardest things to convey and you don't always want to just flat out say how they're feeling. Body language is very important. Take note of certain nervous tics and slight changes in behavior. It helps, trust me.
Just have fun! I can't express this enough. If you're bored with your own work, your readers most likely will be too. If it makes you happy don't let anyone tell you what you should or shouldn't write.
Just a reminder that us fanfic writers are people too and we're doing this for free just to entertain others. Please be kind to us!
Have a great day everyone!
