A Grand Junction police officer was suspended without pay and demoted after an investigation found he improperly accessed a database used by law enforcement to gain information about a former acquaintance. That acquaintance questions why the officer still has a job. Police Chief John Camper said city policy prohibited him from specifying the discipline imposed last week after an internal investigation of police Cpl. Cal Atkinson. The chief, however, did not dispute claims made by a former Grand Junction resident, Mandy Rooks, who said she was told Atkinson received a “lengthy” suspension and loss of rank. “Termination was strongly considered,” Camper told The Daily Sentinel. “We received an allegation that an officer inappropriately accessed a database to find out her (Rooks’) address and provide that to her (former) husband.” The department also found no criminality in Atkinson’s actions.
