Chris Zylka as Corperal Kurtz in DARE ME
So first time watching Dare Me, my attention was captivated by our leading ladies and I admittedly neglected some other things because my eyes were all on them, but upon re-watch, I’m really noticing just how predatory and disturbing all the recruiters are.
Kurtz obviously takes the cake, but like, no, all of them. You got Will taking Micheal to the bar, of all places, to sweet talk him bout the service. All three of ‘em take him to the fucking gun range when I don’t even think he’s old enough to be there (he’s 16, ig??). Tibbs goes in on making out with RiRi, another teenage girl. And of course, all them partying at the Playland and nobody objects till the JV girls show, as if the slightly older girls weren’t still underage teens. I remembered them being shady on first watch, but I srsly didn’t notice just how calculated all that was until re-watch.
Someone get these bastards outta that school, smdh.

Ok dare me ask - i think your idea about coach using what happened with Beth and Kurtz as a ‘positive’ for her is so interesting. Basically I agree, and I think Colette will want to frame it as ‘oh god yes it must be him, he raped my poor squad member it was awful, he is a monster, I tried to help her but she rejected its etc. it would be SUPER interesting to see if Beth would deny everything though just to spite Colette, or if everyone would find out and she would have basically a breakdown.
Pretty much, dude. Do I think Couch wanted Beth to be assaulted? No. Do I think Couch cares enough to genuinely support Beth in the situation? Also no.
Couch uses. If what happened to Beth is something she can use, than she’ll use it, and in this case it happens to be something she can use.
I had to say if it got down to it, I personally think Beth would deny it. Which hurts, because she shouldn’t. She should be able to call out what happened to her, she should be able to hold her assailant accountable for what happened to her, not for anything Couch was planning pin on him. But I think Beth would deny it. Out of spite, yes, but also, like, I think Beth has a serious problem with letting herself be vulnerable. She turns her pain inward. If something happens that someone else could see as a vulnerability, she doesn’t let it show.
Even in canon, when Beth does call Kurtz out, she only does so when a situation arises where she feels like she can use her assault to her advantage, as heartbreaking as that is. Whereas directly after it happened, she defaulted to being as avoidant as possible.
I think it’s pretty clear that coach (couch?!) French knows Beth has been assaulted after the party, especially after her conversation with Sarge. Does she know about Sarge beating Kurtz up, and is satisfied that is enough ‘punishment’ for him, or does she genuinely not care about Beth? I’d say she’s respecting Beth’s boundaries, but she can’t respect boundaries normally so why in this situation? As an adult, she has duty of care to Beth. She’s basically told that Kurtz raped her and ignores it?
Oh yes, I think Couch knows Beth was assaulted. I think she already strongly suspected and then that conversation with Will confirmed it for her. I don’t think she cares about Beth at all, dude. I think she tried to reach out to Beth and comfort her, just to gauge how Beth was being. I think Couch wanted to feel Beth out and measure her up, to see if Beth would do anything that would impact her. Which could happen theoretically, as Beth does know she’s cheating with Will, and Will is more or less in charge of the guy who raped her. Also, if the assault were to impact Beth at cheer practice.
‘Not a good look for Couch either, since Bert is Couch’s boss. I don’t think Couch cared about Beth at all in that situation. I don’t think she really wanted to take care of Beth, I think she just wanted to assess her to make sure that nothing that happened would come back to bite her in her own ass. While I do think she was genuinely incensed at the insinuation that Beth could be held responsible for what happened, I don’t think she actually cares deeply about Beth’s wellbeing or anything. In fact, in the finale, it seems like she plans on using what happened to Beth to her advantage, as her conversation with Faith implies she has Kurtz in mind for a scapegoat. Which is fucked up, but that’s Couch for you. Couch ain’t anybody’s friend.
Edit: Yeah, I’m pretty sure she knows Will beat up Kurtz. I don’t think she cares about Kurtz being punished, really though. I mean...I think she thinks what happened to Beth was unfortunate, but I don’t see her caring about it beyond that. The Will and Kurtz fight benefits her because it gives him motive to kill Will. And that’s all that really matters to Couch. Not what kind of pain Beth is in. Just how she can get ahead.
