Clinged is an acceptable past tense form of 'cling', just like dreamed is to dream and swimmed is to swim. In general, irregular verb endings are on their way out.
Add to the fact that the poem, 'His dirty hands clinged to her' evokes a certain filthiness due to its modern English wording.
So do me a favor and don't ever correct one of my fucking poems. I know what I'm doing.
