London Farmers Market Review – Robert Mather
London Farmers Market Review – Robert Mather
The video is two minuets and forty seven seconds long; The video is a documentary; I told the story of how the market is customers and how the food sold at the market is fresher and really better then that sold at the super market; especially for the farmers income. Really the food is English grown and less imported. This is all in order to get more people to attend the LFM.
The edit is compromised of an interview; filmed with two-camera angles (multi camera interview). One close up, one medium shot; and Cover shots of the LFM. I paced the edit quickly to keep the viewers entertained, rather then showing a single shot for a long time, I firstly used the best, well shot clips and then the okay ones to fill in gaps. My style of editing the interview shot is to quickly move between the two shots, always allowing movement. I wanted to use happy lively music to get viewers into a good mood. I used violin enforced music to give the hint of a classic, olden day style; linking viewers to their heritage and the fact that markets have been around for over a thousand years in England; in modern times it seem the fashion is dying out due to technological advances.
I paced my edit, told a story that generally would not confuse viewers; keep them entertained; I did not work on the colour correction at all thought the first edit of my LFM. I used allot of cross fading within the edit which I was told did not look professional. My choice of music was also commented on which in turn caused me to change it from the epic style into the more simple violin; I also threw too much information at the viewers; to end this problem I added two 4 second spaces, in-between different areas of the interview; their was no talking within these spaces to let the viewers relax and absorb the interviewers points.
I am currently working on my final edit of the LFM and have resolved many of the problems that plagued me previously; e.g. working on the colour correction, the two interviews were slightly different in colour and were both unsaturated; with guidance from my tutor (Andrea Paffetti). I was able to add colour and lighting through final cut pro’s colour correction software; I was able to witness the interviews full range of colour when I boosted the saturation and added a little colour and lighting; it was a massive leap in aesthetic quality and was visually allot more pleasing then the first, colourless edit of the LFM. I used the technique of colour correction within allot of the other shots in the edit.
Within this part of the course I learnt allot more about colour correction, lighting of shots, that the use of cross fading seems like a petty way to edit clips together (but would look good within certain canaries; not to constantly bombard viewers with information. With all of this I felt I have pushed the boundaries of my editing techniques further then before.

News Reports – BBC vs VICE News vs NBC– Ferguson By Robert Mather
News Reports – BBC vs VICE News vs NBC– Ferguson
By Robert Mather
--------------------------------------------------------------
BBC (UK): The BBC is the leading news providers to the UK public. The BBC reported on the Ferguson incident differently to the way NBC reported. BBC reporters were heard within many of the news reports but not seen until the ends of a few of the videos to sign off the report. They gave mostly unbiased information, focusing on the facts. Source 1 being completely non-fiction, as the report was video and audio recorded live, at the front of a clash between police and protesters. Certain ‘factual’ information within Source 4 seems to me untrue; the way the BBC got the vote percentages for the video seems bias… “How black and white America view Ferguson” (the reports name) it is said that ‘The Pew Research Center’ conducted the poll over a weekend (and we are not told in how many states); meaning that many fundamentalists who are following the Ferguson incident closely would have voted; the type of fundamentalists that hype their beliefs and whom are narrow-minded individuals focused on proving why what they believe is right. I believe a large percentage of the voters over the weekend were white Americans ultimately meaning the vote was bias. If the poll ran for longer, allowing the casual American would answer and the votes would be allot different. The BBC really only followed the protesters and their clashes with police. They did not go in depth with all the different groups being affected by the Ferguson incident unlike VICE News. The BBC seems to use little to no photographic images unlike NBC.

VICE News (INTERNATIONAL): VICE News is an online, American based (although international) news provider; mainly reporting on allot of worldwide, swept under the rug, news that bigger news corporations will not report on due to safety reasons, their international/national status, viewer digression and/or most of the time lack of priority. VICE News has an array of mostly young reporters to relate to younger viewers on the Internet. The VICE News crew on the scene is made up of a small group with light equipment allowing them to move faster and get into the middle of action taking place. Releasing HD footage; the quality matching the lager news companies videos visually. The young news reporters can also relate to allot of the protesters and so the vox populi and interviews seem more relaxed and real rather then large lights and cameras being pushed into the protesters faces spooking them. The main priority for VICE News is to well… report the news and entertain; this allows for certain areas of their news report to be funny/entertaining of what is happening around them; areas that would not have a second thought to be cut out of a BBC’s or NBC’s final product; VICE News seems more real and in the moment, way less Fabricated then the bigger news companies; VICE’s reports get all sides of the argument in their news reports; both white and black shop keepers in different areas, the protesters, black women, white guys, young people old people, well off people, people who live in the community area of Ferguson; Every view, opinion, rant is captured. VICE News don’t have TV time limits to meat; no time limit actually, except their own set time when they will upload their video to YouTube. If a story is big enough VICE News jumps on it and follow it producing more documentary stile news than that seen within the larger news productions. As the story progresses they will report on it but also get a different view point from a different group of people involved. Their viewer rates are allot lower than NBC & BBC but I prefer their news reports to the larger news companies. VICE News advertises themselves at the end of the report which is something the big news channels do through advertisements. VICE News does not advertise (to my knowledge) they usually try to link charity sites to the video description on YouTube; directly or indirectly to raise awareness and funding for those in need.

NBC News (US): NBC is a major (international) news company (it’s left wing siding with obama); it provides news mainly for an American population. First of all, many of the American NBC reports on the Ferguson story has an anchor-man and a reporter at the scene. There are photos, text and video shown behind the anchor-man in a little box. For me it seems like this downgrades the actual situation and highly promotes the anchor-man. The BBC reports did not do this, they rarely showed themselves but American news seems to show off their reporters more. The NBC reporters and anchor-men describe the action vividly as it unfolds. In source 4 there was a debate where two individuals started arguing over their own beliefs; talking over/ trying to be louder than the other. This made the debate seem more interesting but also basic and childish. You supported one side of the argument or the other and wanted that speaker to seem wiser as they argue. This is something that happens frequently within American news rather than in BBC where the speakers would be asked to stop if they were going on too much or would be more civilised. NBC News used allot of moving photographic image within their reports, more commonly than the BBC News reports. The reports vary from emotionally driven to pure professional although the emotionally driven reporters seem to be more popular. Each reporter adding a bit of their own viewpoint and traits to the final product. An NBC reporter in one of the videos took control of his camera crew; when the police were firing around the news crews that had set up outside the NBC reporter told the crew to go back outside and film him caring less about their safety and more about himself and the recording.
