Every time I think Strahd can’t possibly be more of a bastard… he proves me wrong!
I’m still trying to process what the hell just happened in my last session. So let’s just say it all started with Gabrielle waking up in the Count’s bed after a very eventful night. Skipping a few details, from that point up until almost the end of the session it was a lot of banter, a lot of teasing, a lot of veiled threats, and well… Gabrielle and Strahd were on their way to the village of Barovia because they were about to welcome the new adventurers in the most “innocent massacre” way possible.
But after a few revelations and some conversations, things kind of… shifted. Actually, it got way more tense, because out of nowhere the DM dropped the bomb that, at some point, a terrible threat would come to Barovia — and that would be Azalin knocking on the door. Because apparently those two are still not done fighting, and are still fully committed to dragging each other through the dirt. :)
And in order to defeat Azalin (again), Strahd needed a very competent army. And now he had a brave paladin right in his hands, someone more than capable of training new paladins. And paladins are excellent against liches and their undead hordes. So, you know… why dirty your own hands when you can have someone else do it for you? :D
So he basically ordered Gabrielle to go to the old, abandoned (and possibly recently restored) Abbey of Krezk to train, or rather, to rebuild her order using the poor souls of Barovia. And he, being such a kind and just count, made a very simple offer: give me your children to be trained there, and in return I won’t slaughter all of you. Sounds very fair, very generous, right? As always, Strahd being a truly kind man with a big heart ♡
And Gabrielle was like, "well… okay, I can do that, but what exactly is stopping me from using all of this to my own advantage? Other than the fact that I’m your vampire spawn and you can kind of control me, buuut let’s ignore that for a second. Why are you giving me this much power and freedom?"
And then she realizes they’re standing in the middle of a swamp. Abandoned. Foggy. Gloomy. And immediately she’s like, yeah, something’s off.
And I started getting suspicious the moment he said that, in the distance, you could hear the sound of metal, like a hammer striking iron, like a forge. But sure. There are plenty of blacksmiths out there, right?
So they step out of the carriage, he walks ahead, and then a child just appears out of nowhere, runs into his arms, and goes, “Uncle Strahd, you’re back!” Yeah. That’s when the bad feeling really kicked in.
And then Strahd leaves, tells her to enjoy herself, and in the distance she sees the silhouette of a man. A very familiar one.
Her family, the one that died before she went to Barovia, the whole reason she even went to Barovia in the first place, wasn’t actually dead. The bodies she buried… well, we don’t even know whose bodies those were. Or if she buried anyone at all. But her husband and her son have been there. For almost three years. Hidden in that swamp in Barovia. Because, by Strahd’s “benevolence”, they were “saved.”
And I have not processed the fact that Strahd now has the tightest leash imaginable around Gabrielle’s neck. She is completely at his mercy in a way she has never been before, because now she knows her family is alive... “saved” by him.
And apparently her son likes "Uncle Strahd". And her husband recognizes that the kind Count saved them somehow?? And I still have no idea what the justification is for them being abandoned in a swamp with absolutely nothing and no one, but—
Yeah. My DM just dropped that bomb on me and ended the session right there c:
At long last it is done, a refined character illustration of Valeriy Ivliskova, my reborn Eldritch Knight for Ravenloft games.
