so you want to start a skincare/cosmetics brand? let's talk manufacturing 🧴
not the fun part, but the part that decides whether your brand actually launches or stays a Pinterest board forever.
a few real things to know before you DM any manufacturer:
🔹 private label vs custom formula — private label = their formula, your label (fast, cheap, less unique). custom = built from scratch for you (slower, pricier, but it's actually yours)
🔹 minimum order quantities (MOQs) — some places will make 500 units, some won't even talk to you under 5k. ask this literally first, before you fall in love with anything
🔹 who handles compliance — ingredient lists, stability testing, safety docs. a good manufacturer does this for you. a bad one leaves you scrambling to figure out regulations solo
🔹 timelines are longer than you think — private label can be weeks. full custom formulation is often 2-4 months+. plan your launch date accordingly

feel free to send asks if you're stuck on any part of this, happy to help where I can 💌

the men's grooming space in india is growing fast, but most people never think about what happens before a product shows up on the shelf.
a few things that stood out to me about third-party cosmetics manufacturing for men's ranges:
men's skin ≠ women's skin, formulation-wise. oilier, larger pores — so surfactant choice and pH balance end up mattering a lot more than people assume.
stability testing is the boring step everyone wants to skip. it's also the one thing that decides whether your product survives past the first few months without complaints.
low MOQ manufacturing is a bigger deal than it sounds — it means new brands can test the market without committing to warehouse-sized batches on day one.
and on the regulatory side (India specifically): cosmetic rules 2020, an FDA facility license, plus a separate AYUSH license if you're making ayurvedic claims.
none of this is glamorous but it's basically the difference between a product that works and one that gets returned.
i quit all skincare products and my skin has never been happier
used 5+ face washes, all broke me out. tried niacinamide serums (5% and 10%), broke me out. 0.1% retinol, broke me out. vitamin C derivatives, broke me out. good moisturizers — hydro boost, cetaphil, cerave — broke me out. 8+ "non-comedogenic" sunscreens, broke me out. azelaic acid didn't break me out exactly but irritated my skin into tiny pimples.
turns out even my shampoo and conditioner had niacinamide in them. of course.
so i gave up. all of it. and fixed my sleep instead — same bedtime, same wake time, every day. drank 3-4L water daily. no products.
and my skin just... got better. acne calmed down. texture improved. face looked less puffy, eyes less tired, fine lines less noticeable. no scars disappeared, no fine lines vanished, i just started looking like a healthy version of my actual age instead of a dry, over-treated one.
I have used a lot of face washes than five and they all made my skin break out. I also tried niacinamide serums I used the five percent and the ten percent. They made my skin break out too. I even used retinol, a small amount point one percent and that made my skin break out as well. I tried vitamin C derivatives. They did the same thing. I used moisturizers like hydro boost and cetaphil and cerave but they made my skin break out too. I tried a lot of sunscreens than eight that said they were non-comedogenic but they all made my skin break out. Azelaic acid did not make my skin break out. It did irritate my skin and gave me tiny pimples.
I found out that my shampoo and conditioner even had niacinamide in them which is just great.
So I decided to give up on all of these products. I stopped using them all. I started taking care of my skin in a different way. I went to bed at the time every night and I woke up at the same time every morning. I drank a lot of water three to four liters every day. I did not use any skin products all.
My skin started to look better. My acne calmed down my skin texture improved my face did not look as puffy my eyes did not look as tired. The fine lines on my face were not as noticeable. My scars did not. My fine lines did not go away but I started to look like a healthy version of myself instead of a dry and over-treated version.
I also started going in the morning to get some sunlight just for ten to twenty minutes. I would just look at the sky. To protect my skin from the sun during the day I started using barriers like a hat with a face flap that had upf fifty and a full face helmet when I was, on my bike and upf fifty arm sleeves. I did not need to use any sunscreen all.
It turns out that my skin did not need all of these products with active ingredients. My skin just needed me to get sleep drink enough water and to leave it alone.
turns out my skin didn't need $$$ actives. it needed sleep, water, and to be left alone.
