WIP Wednesday

Thanks for the tags, @wolfsong-the-bloody-beast, @davrinsleftpectoral, @sorcerousadventurer, @necromanticsoul, and @jenn2d2! I loved seeing what you all were working on!

I've been doing FenHawke Week stuff this week, but while the last art piece for it is actually a WIP, that's not what I'm going to share right now, because I think it's time to check in on the Cosplay Boss Fight.

Still broken down into sub-boss phases, and...oh dear, they summoned a buddy.

On the other hand, I've ticked down health on each. Turns out the Journey Cloak is really weak to the "Already Done Most of the Work" attack, and the kid who's cosplaying as the Inquisitor has been focusing fire on that one while I've been managing the others (and ADHD).

And yes, there's now a fifth costume on the roster. Specifically, my husband (who loves necromancer characters) thought it would be fun to cosplay as Emmrich. Neither of us has enough time to try to assemble a full armor outfit for him, but his Lighthouse casuals should be doable.

I don't have progress shots for everything, but let's get some highlights in here at least.

Grey Warden Armor

First up, Grey Warden Armor. I knocked off a little health there because I'm also working on a sheath for my sword, and made a cardboard insert to go between the inner lining and outer faux leather. While I need to see what lining options I have, I do have the faux leather for the outside (a purse and a jacket that I picked up at the thrift store for a dollar each and disassembled at the seams).

Inquisitor Coat

Next is the Inquisitor coat. I helped my daughter alter the base coat, but then she's been working on adding the gold bits mostly by herself. There's also a waist sash we didn't photograph. After trying it all on with her boots, she worried that we'd cut the coat too short, so she ended up salvaging some of what we previously cut off and extended the length again, which is why it's longer on the right.

The right-hand photo is also after she started adding the gold trim (piping or something? whatever, we're using shiny ribbon). Next up is buttons (on the shoulders and down the front, none of them functional), trim around the buttons, and a snap for the shoulder bit that holds the cross-body sash in place (so we don't have to fiddle with buttonholes). Also probably hook-and-eye closures for the wrist cuffs so they don't gap open, but we'll see.

Journey Cloak

Okay, so, we're cheating a little. The cape and scarf were made two years ago for Halloween, and yet we're counting them in the progress. But I had to redo the hood because the original was too tight, even when I made it (the issues of trying to print off patterns on multiple sheets of paper and hoping you get the right size). It's fine, I free-handed the pattern based on the shape of the original pattern piece plus some fresh measurements, and this one is definitely better. It not only fits over her head, but also isn't patchworked together like the old one was (I had issues with getting enough material then).

For the mask, the papier-mache one we made two years ago is awkward and doesn't fit well over glasses, so we're improvising this year. That's a neck gaiter/sunblock hood thing that we think might work out. I need to sift through my black material in my craft room to make a panel to fill in the eye hole, then cut out eye holes in that and fill them with a whitish mesh material I have to try to evoke the glowing white eyes a bit.

(I may also have to jury-rig something to keep the hood from sliding back on her head, but that's for later.)

Aloy

No photos, so just a header. I've been making inchworm progress on the pouches (the ADHD getting in the way), but we've also acquired some materials for accessories, and this kid spent some time today staining wooden beads for necklaces. I'll try to remember to get shots of that stuff for next time.

Emmrich's Lighthouse Casuals

Finally, Emmrich. Supplies have been acquired, including a small number of additional bangles not seen here. I tried to adjust the photo a bit because the lighting was trash (oops). Two red scarves to do his waist sash, an off-white button-down shirt, and a green suit coat that's actually really close to Emmrich's vest color I believe, which I'm going to tailor into said vest. I just need to wrap my husband's torso in saran wrap and masking tape first so I can make a pattern. Also a purse underneath that has a belt-like shoulder strap that will work for the belt Emmrich wears with his sash, and which will also provide me with some additional material for other projects (yay, disassembling purses).

My husband has been tasked with finding 3D print files for some of the more unique accessory pieces (two of his gold cuffs, the skull brooch, that sort of thing).

And I've got a cosplay check-in for you all! I mentioned before that I'm working on cosplay through the summer, with four costumes to get ready by the end of August. We'll see how that goes.

First off, Kid#3's Journey cloak: hasn't been worked on yet. I need to swing by Goodwill, but on a Monday when they've got extra sales on, and this past Monday was Memorial Day (even if Goodwill was open, I had other obligations to manage that day). I did, however, order one of those lightweight UV hoods on Amazon to redo the mask, and it arrived today, so we'll see what we can do with that.

Second, Kid#3's Aloy costume: is still just supplies, but that's more than nothing.

Here's everything we picked up for it (so far) laid out on my couch. Two red t-shirts, two blue t-shirts, a few brown t-shirts that could work for Aloy's base layer, a dark brown pair of pants that will probably work for her pants, and then a brown pair of jeans and two brown jackets (one faux suede, the other tweed I think?) to cobble together for the rest.

Step one is to worry about getting those base pieces done. Embellishment with (faux) fur, armor bits, beads, and fringe can come later. Belt pouches may very well end up being one or more purses or satchels I cannibalize for parts (something I do frequently). Hopefully whatever we put together doesn't end up too warm to wear.

Third, Kid#2's Inquisitor casuals: I mentioned before that we have the base coat for her outfit done, thanks to finding something suitable several months ago at Goodwill that we could alter down to the right shape. It's got a lovely texture to it, and even has pockets we were able to save!

We were able to preserve the snaps the coat originally came with and put them back in for holding it shut, so the buttons on the game model can be purely decorative (which saves us having to sew buttonholes).

We also took a photo of our materials, pattern pieces, and her reference sheet she drew for the whole costume.

These are for the gold parts of the costume. She's doing cuffs rather than full gloves (brown pattern piece), and the sash assembly is going to be in three pieces (cross-body one like a pageant queen, as it appears to be in-game too, then a wide sash belt that hooks together in the back, and another sash belt piece that tapers at the ends to go over it and tie in the front, because otherwise we aren't sure how that wide sash is supposed to work).

Our two gold fabric lengths there are a tablecloth and a bedsheet, by the way. The tablecloth has a nice texture we're going to use for the outer parts of the gold parts, while the bedsheet is going to be backing material.

And finally, my Grey Warden armor: is going to get its own post for the parts I've already done (stay tuned for later today), but here's how it looks at the moment on Galatea, my homemade dress form (along with the concept art for reference):

She's banged up in a few places from wearing her around the con in 2023, when I last worked on this, so I'll have to do some touch-ups to fix that (a few paint repairs, reinforcing one scale that ripped). I've got a bunch of thin cardboard (like from cereal boxes) to start figuring out patterns for the armor plates I'm going to do (breastplate and gorget, pauldrons, tassets, but nothing else).

A good portion of this costume already exists, so I'll have to make a separate post to show all that off.
