Powers & Weaknesses
Blessed by the Mother of the Sea
The Cotas are blessed by the Mother of the Sea and therefor are quick underwater and can swim to unbelievable depths that most water creatures can not reach. Sea creatures will either fear or respect the Cotas.
The sacrifice of the ocean
Due to the sacrifices of the Mother of the Sea, the Cotas can chop off their fingers and summon seals to aid them in fight or hardship. The fingers will grow back over the span of a few months.
Nightvision Both underwater as well as above, the Cotas can see in darkness
Excellent swimmers Swimming, diving and the pressure of deep depths are no problem for the Cotas
High cold-resistance Originating from the arctic the Cotas are comfortable in the cold.
Low heat-resistance
Rendering them slow, sluggish and tired.
Carnivore diet The Cotas eats a diet of meat and fish, preferably raw. While there are groups of Cotas who stopped eating human flesh that is an exception rather than a rule. Eating anything but meat will give them stomach and digestion issues.
Dependency on salt water The Cotas needs a bath of salt water every week or they’ll dry out and eventually die.
The children of the Arctic sea…
A soft hum echoes across the pale snow and ice, you do not know what it is that you’re hearing but dread fills you to the bone as something is near. Then, out of nowhere, a claw. It crashes through the thin ice and snatches young humans- with a scream you see the last moment of the child. They’re gone.
The children of the Arctic sea (Cotas) are related, but not similar, to merfolk. Their appearance when in the water is one of webbed hands and long hair that seems to have a life of it’s own. Large fins come from their backs and sometimes their heads- often they are more similar to predatory sea creatures than docile fish. Large tails make them able to swim fast and quick- able to keep up with human speedboats.
With the heart of a hunter they are fast and live off a diet of solely meat. The Cotas underwater look similar to merfolk but where the merfolk can pass for human out of the water- the Cotas were not blessed with this. When out of water they spawn legs but they keep a thick fish-tail that protrudes from their lower back, often wrapped in cloth as it may touch the ground. They keep their webbed hands but their gills and back and head fins disappear.
