fandom: Fallout New Vegas
full name: Nox Avienus [previously: Arbor]
gender: gnc cis+ woman
pronouns: any, with slight preference to she/her
age: 26 at the start of FNV
species: human
race/ethnicity/class: white, from a merchant family before her town was assimilated into the Legion
describe them physically: 6'0, statuesque. She's got a lot of muscle and might generally be considered physically imposing, though people are more put off by her very grim affect. Her left ear has six spike stud earrings which are a mirror of Cato's own six piercings in his right ear. She's blonde and usually has a terrible haircut which she slicks back.
describe how they dress: Nox loves a reason to dress up formally when she's not in her Legion uniform or trekking across the desert. As soon as she's within 10 miles of Vegas it's her nicest suit, dress shoes, cufflinks, fine rings, whatever makes her look important. Even when practicality must prevail, Nox favours craftsmanship in whatever she wears--handmade ponchos, custom armor, etc.
favorite things: Chilling by the lake. Fishing and sweet drinks of any kind. Swimming. Flavoured tobacco. Any type of puzzle. Catching up on gossip. A New Bug.
least favorite things: Robots. About 9/10ths of her fellow Legionaries.
hobbies: She has time for very few but she loves after her pet bugs and lizards (she really is so robbed to not have the opportunity to be an aquarium nut). Reading pulp novels. Also dabbles in leatherworking.
quirks: Struggles with showing enthusiasm even when she really is excited about something, similarly has a limited range of ways to show affection. Really good with animals and knows a lot about different ecosystems. Needs to eat A LOT.
what’s up in the romance department (and if they’re aro, are they in a queerplatonic relationship): lesbian who does alright at casual relationships but has avoided deeper attachments until Veronica (who turns her down. Thus leading Nox to soul search maybe for the first time in her life.)
best qualities: Sincere, protective of those she cares for, surprisingly strong sense of justice (being unjust is the main issue she takes with the Legion's leadership, she just doesn't correctly identify that the Legion itself is an engine of injustice)
worst flaws: Ambition, not the most imaginative, doesn't read theory
fears/phobias: Being outed to the Legion, being perceived as weak
tell us in a few lines how you got the idea for them/how they came to be: I wanted to do a Legion run and originally made Cato but he wasn't really hitting for me; so I devised an evil twin sister for him and roleplayed her instead. Most of her early traits emerged as a consequence of trying to imagine a believable female Legion courier - for me this meant giving her a stake in the Legion beyond just personal gain. Having her as someone whose identity was already shaped by assimilation into the Legion felt more compelling than having her as an outsider who sides with them during the game events (and helped tie her and Cato's stories together and let me develop him down the road).
if you feel like it, add some sketches, drawings or pictures of your OC or anything that relates to them:
(the 2 b&w drawings are by the lovely and talented @drbread)
my partner asked me why Nox and Cato are slightly different heights if they're twins and I said it's because Nox ate her veggies and grew up big and strong
anyway we determined that Nox probably just straight up stole Cato's lunch for their entire childhood
C, J and X for Nox! ☆
C: What perk would your OC give if they were a companion?
Once per day Companion!Nox just picks up the highest level enemy attacking you and then does a suplex on them. The animation takes 30 seconds and you just have to stand there taking damage from everyone else while this happens.
J: What would your OC do if they lived prewar? If they did live prewar, why did they do that?
I think she would have worked in forestry services somehow because she likes little critters and wants to live in the woods. And also carry a gun.
X: What is your OC’s “classic” outfit?
I imagine her wearing a modified version of the Legion armor when she's not undercover. I never actually conceptualized her whole "courier"/undercover outfit 😭 but she does have a poncho.
a short bit of nox and cat at their father’s funeral...
~~ ~~ ~~
They are permitted to return home only once.
It should not come as any surprise that eventually someone would inflict a perceived revenge on their father. The man who helped organize the slaughter of many so that the few remaining could live. So that she and her brother might count themselves among those few. All things taken into consideration, an assassination was long overdue. And now someone has finally stood to settle the account.
Nox appreciates a chance to dress in her marching uniform. Her tunica is longer, hemmed with gold and tied with a matching cord. The long red fabric of her paludamentum billows gently like a flag about her neck and shoulders. She has polished her boots almost into a new pair altogether, matching with the plated metal of her curaias and her gauntlets. She feels mechanical like this. A true and proud product of Page Steel, of the Legion.
She thinks her father would be proud. For all his weakness and regrets. He would have no choice but to be proud.
Cato stands at her side, his own image almost impressive as well. His simple veteran uniform too crisp and proper for the man inside of it. With their faces all uncovered, it is impossible to miss the tears threatening at the edges of his eyes or the pained press of his lips as he tries to keep himself in order.
“Try not to shame the both of us,” Nox reminds him. Not for the first time.
Cato doesn’t even look at her but still she can sense the annoyance overtake his grief for a moment. It is simple with him. Her brother may be weak but his temper is strong, and his anger towards her is an ember that is easily coaxed to flame.
Nox can only hope that one day Cato will understand the solemn duty she performs in feeding that fire. That he will not grow to resent her beyond reason before coming to know that it is what any good sibling would do to keep their blood alive.
hello! for the oc ask meme: Which canon character annoys your OC? for any or all of your ocs hehe :)
[gonna do this one for my Big Three :3]
Nox:
My most annoyable OC surrounded by the greatest number of annoying dudes but I think lowkey none of them drive her as crazy as Vulpes. Their dynamic is like if you had an irritating coworker but also that coworker was your cousin or whatever so you've gotta deal with them All. The. Time. Not just at work.
Vulpes isn't even the legionary she hates the most but he's the one who always makes her Ben Affleck Smoking Dot Jpeg.
Cato:
Arcade. The two of them have a decent amount in common and even kind of a rapport, but they also beef in a way that only two gays who are a little too alike can beef. Cato thinks Arcade is sooo pretentious and Arcade thinks the same of him (both of them are right).
In another life they would've made a beautiful divorced couple 💞
Xavier:
He's almost impossible to 'annoy', but Piper gets under his skin just a little bit by being very nosy when he's fresh out of the vault (he spends weeks ducking her and avoiding her interview before she gives up).
I, S, and Y for Cato and Nox!
I: Does your OC know anything about the prewar?
Nox: She knows quite a lot of like Old Old history thanks to being one of those kids with an interest in knights and such. Everything she knows about recent prewar history she read in magazine while shaking her head to indicate disapproval (no knights 😔). Cato: Actually knows quite a lot more about the recent prewar world. He's also the guy who actually knows all the prewar singers on the radio and their lesser known bangers.
S: Does your OC have any health problems? Mental or physical?
Nox: She's been exceptionally lucky to not suffer even a mildly debilitating injury (and thankfully every bad thing she's ever witnessed is buried sooo deep she's definitely Not going to start showing signs of the guaranteed C-PTSD she's lugging around). Cato: His traumatic brain injury is an ongoing health problem with both mental and physical effects. Most notable is the total personality change he experiences: going from a very personable and gentle soul to "if a man a poorly socialized shelter dog barking and biting everyone around him". He also loses some limbs later.
Y: Does your OC fit with canon?
Cato: Yes, he's the 'canon' type Courier. Nox: Yes and no? She never got shot in the head and instead steals her Cato's identity for clout - but I also make her fit with canon. She is canon To Me.
10 + 18 for Nox
10. What's the first significant injury your OC remembers getting? Did it leave any scars?
When she was about 10 Nox tumbled down a cliff by accident and a got badly shredded trying to stop her tumble. She had many visible but small scars on her palms which have since faded considerably, but the more prominent scars from deeper gashes on her legs are still noticeable.
18. If your OC were to return to their childhood home now, what would that look like? How would they feel?
Nox's hometown is quite similar to how she left it in terms of the industry side of things; Page Steel is a machine that churns out Legion weaponry and armor. It also continues to be a center for Legion-sanctioned trade but the thriving marketplaces that once defined it as an important regional hub are not what they once were. I think overall she would feel kind of bitter at the change, but not be able to admit to any longing for that former community. This is part of why I think she avoids returning there.
