okay like the festival is great and yasha's arm wrestling competition is so fun and compelling but even more so is that like. the military is hosting this arm wrestling contest at a festival to scout for soldiers for the war while actively preaching pro-empire propaganda. the man yasha beats explicitly points out he knows she's from xhorhas because he's been fighting on the front. yasha is so good the recruiter runs after her to try and get her to join up. it's an incredibly fun narrative moment but it's also doing vital and interesting world building about the quickly heating up conflict between the dynasty and the empire

Jester, about how more and more Xhorassians are getting into the Empire : "I wonder how. I wonder if there's an underground passage that people aren't seeing or something... Or maybe they can go invisible. Or maybe they have an airship !!! Or maybe they can turn into mist, and fly through the air where people can't see them (I've heard of people doing that)."

Pretty sure that I've made this post before but episode 17 is proof that the dice gods are real.

If I remember correctly from Matt's notes about episode 17, I find it interesting that he had the officials almost reject the nein before letting them join. I wonder if it's so the fact they can spy on the war announcement with a bit less of a railroad feel to it. It makes the sequence feel a bit natural.

the best things about the victory pit episode (a mostly comprehensive list)

caleb booking it after talking to the cobalt soul people because that was arguably the longest one on one conversation he’s had on screen

yasha trying to avoid the military salespeople but being too awkward to avoid taking a pamphlet

beau telling caleb that “cobalt looks good on you” to try and let him know that She Knows What’s Up, but he misses the comment so it just sounds like a really awkward compliment

fjord desperately trying to figure out what kind of beasts there are in the victory pit (featuring the weird conversation with the crownsguard and the “i wonder what they’ll do about the flying creature” to darrow)

beau recognizing dolan in the crowd and everyone immediately going “[gasp] our dolan?!”

nott eavesdropping by disguising herself as just a Big Fucking Box (and remaining inside said box while they make their way to the waiting area)

“don’t look at me like that- no, you can look at me, just not like that-”

jester bragging about getting all the caramel apples

caleb’s nerdy librarian “disguise” that is actually 100% his personality

jester defacing the temple

the fact that everyone was more hyped up for yasha’s arm wrestling contest than literally any other thing they’ve fought

the instant awe at the fact that the stubborn stock has business coins

Beau is talking with Jester about the Xhorassian assassin talked about how the beacon "would help them with having babies" and that if he doesn't have it, "then he won't be able to have babies.".

Big brain Beau (and Marisha) : "You know how that town crier was talking about kids being stolen ? You think they're connected ?"
