It really is very interesting for Caleb to call Nott "young" and try to hide Yasha's raw expression of grief from her as a means of protecting her, with the retrospect to know that a) she is certainly not the youngest party member and b) that she has personally experienced far more damaging things than a friends' grief. I would also say it's deeply interesting that Caleb feels the need to to protect her from this--raw grief. The loss of a loved one. The party has been told Nott is full grown at this point, but I honestly think Caleb's reaction has more to do with himself than with her. This is a grief he knows very personally, and in the wake of it he turns to protect someone who is younger and smaller than him in a way he himself could not be protected from his own grief. If Nott doesn't have to see it, then she shouldn't see it. He cares for her, so if he can hide her from just a bit of that pain, then he will
