Craig Battams, our Dr Givings, talks to us about working with FLW Theatre.
If your character was a food/animal/colour, what food/animal/colour would they be?
Dr Givings is a dry Sunday roast, not unpleasant and definitely liked but not quite what you were hoping for. Along the same track his spirit animal would be an old iguana, much like “Jub Jub” from the hit television series The Simpsons.
And if the Doctor were a colour he would be a deep rich brown suede.
What is your favourite double entendre from The Vibrator Play?
“I have too much energy you see?” Catherine Givings
What is your most hysterical moment?
Onstage; Finding Catherine listening at the door to the operating theatre. Off stage; frantically cramming lines before I go on (not a drug reference).
What is the most important part of The Vibrator Play?
The most important part of the play is Leo’s announcement that he is leaving and Mrs Givings is pleading with him. It shows her lack of understanding and Leo’s true intentions. Arguably, the sex scene is the most important scene as it is what will really get bums on seats on the night.
Who is your comedy inspiration?
Dr Givings derives his comedic influence from John Cleese’s, Archie Leach from A Fish Named Wanda. The bumbling uptightness and ultimate who-gives-a-damn-ery is what the Doctor is channelling in the show.
What's it like to work with FLW Theatre?
Working with FLW is confronting, sexy and always fun. They touch on some strange and taboo subjects but after the initial desensitisation to the subject real messages can be brought out of the stories.
If I had to liken it to any other experience I would say it’s like playing with an anaconda that feels nice on your skin but scares you a bit, you know, because it can kill you.
Shoot, Marry, Shag: Mrs Givings, Mrs Daldry and Leo Irving.
Shoot Leo, for trying to get in my wife’s pants, that fancy pants pompous bastard. Shag Mrs Daldry and show her what it is meant to be like and marry Mrs Givings of course. That woman is so damn excitable and up for new stuff in the bedroom it’s impossible not to choose her.
