TODAY'S FACT IS
Did you know that the Spotted Crane Fly (Nephrotoma appendiculata) is found in much of Europe and northern Africa? They like to spend their time in forest edges, farmlands, and rough grasslands. The larvae are sometimes called leatherjackets, but have no relation to anything actually leathery.

made up flybuary where i draw a fly every day of february. this is a tiger cranefly (nephrotoma lugens) which is found in eastern north america. nephrotoma is distributed worldwide but has the most diversity in the holarctic and the afrotropics. the larvae, like many other craneflies, live in the soil where they may cause damage to plants.
i believe these are all crane flies? i've been seeing them around a lot lately!
