JOMP BPC - September 8th - Worst Book in a Series You Liked

I didn't care much for Fallout, the finale to the Crank trilogy by Ellen Hopkins. I loved the first two novels in this story told in verse but the third just didn't do it for me

Review: Glass by Ellen Hopkins Rating: 4/5

In this spellbinding follow up to her 2004 novel, Crank, Ellen Hopkins continues the story of Kristina Snow who has fallen victim to the chemical romance of crystal meth. Now with a baby and an unclear future, Kristina feels less in control than ever before until she finds herself back in the clutches of the drug she fought to free herself from. But addiction is a winding road and Kristina is about to get tangled up in it.

This is one book that definitely does not suffer from sequel syndrome. While it did take a while to get started, Glass never pulls its punches as we see Kristina descend back into her addiction and take things a whole lot further. Watching her neglect her family, her work, and her child to feed her addiction was ultimately heartbreaking and it’s an unflinching take on how much damage addiction can do. But this book, and its predecessor, never become preachy the way other YA drug narratives (*cough* Go Ask Alice *cough*) tend to do.

I did feel that the poetry wasn’t as effective this time around but that may just be because when I read Crank (way back in 2010), it was the first verse novel I’d ever read. But it does make for quick reading - though definitely not easy reading. This book tackles issues of drug use and dealing, child abuse, sexual harassment, prostitution, and some aftermath of the rape Kristina suffered in the first book so be aware of that if you’re looking into this series.

A fascinating read and I can’t wait to read the series finale, Fallout, and see how Kristina’s children managed in the wake of her addiction.
