I've always wanted to get into film and learn about the industry a bit more and possibly have a major with something film related but idk where to even start? Do you have good suggestions or tips
Hi Anon,
My first suggestion is always to just go out and make things. I know many people who have followed me for a long time are probably sick of this answer, but honestly, it’s the best way. Having scripts and films to your name, even if you don’t like them, shows that you are committed to your craft and that you take initiative. Second, it is a learning experience that you can’t get anywhere else. Sure you can go to film school, but ultimately, its the projects you do (within or without school) that teach you the most and help you find your unique voice and style. Third, making your own content is a way to build your portfolio and show you have experience (thus avoiding the Catch-22 that you need a job for experience, but experience to get a job.)
My next suggestion is to go out and find internships. Most likely, you will start out on small sets with no pay, but again, it is experience (and networking!). You will have a chance to ask your boss about the industry and learn some technical skills as well. You can look for internships by asking friends and family if they know anybody, you can volunteer your services to organizations that need promotional material but don’t have enough manpower, you can even check job postings online (though this is pretty difficult for local jobs.)
My final suggestion is use your resources. If film school is your scene, try that.(Here are some school recommendations: US, Canadian, International) If not, there are other resources at your disposal. Read filmmaking books, watchYoutube channels dedicated to film, research different cameras for beginners and later more advanced equipment, ask people you know in the industry specific questions about different fields…
Good luck to you!
Jules
