If you want to follow my time at ad school/portfolio school I decided to make a separate blog so I can keep it all nicely collected there.

This first quarter has been full of highs and lows. I definitely DID break down in tears one night over the doubts in my head. But nearing the end of the quarter I feel at ease. I feel like I’m doing something right with my life, doing something productive with my artistic passion and skills and actually enjoying it. True there have been some awful projects with the infamous Sylvia (I.E. BAGS) but in the end I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished and all the sweat and tears I’ve put into my work. I’ve discovered I love script and typography, I also love putting together magazine layouts. I’ve discovered I hate designing bags and anything three dimensional, and I am horrible at keeping myself on track with scheduling.
Next quarter is going to be equally hard, but I am more comfortable with the amount of hard work ahead. I have to figure out how to schedule in a daily workout, especially running again. I need to space out more time for working on projects and not JUST the weekend.
I’m also ending this quarter with a few comments from Sylvia that truly have made this quarter worth it. Her honest comments about my bags being “award worthy” and that I should be proud of my work. Honestly, that last part is always hard for me, being proud of my work. As an artist you are always criticising and wishing you could do more because NOTHING will EVER be what you truly want it to be, what you see in your head. But when the most feared design teacher at your school gives you a good heart warming compliment you take it for everything it’s worth.
I may still have more work to finish and have to get through panel without breaking out in sweat and shaking like a leaf, but I know I’ll be okay and that I’ve done something I doubted I could do at the very beginning. There will always be days of self doubt and failure, but in the end it’s worth it.
I am learning to be a designer. I can say that I really am enjoying it so far.
Now I can’t wait until break so I can make tons of soap...
One year ago, Sylvia told my class that the fifth week of Fifth Quarter was the breaking point for many students.
We’ll find out soon.
Deathmatch Project #2: Design a record for rerelease
I got Stevie Wonder’s “Songs In The Key Of Life”. This was truly a labor of love. I don’t want to get too gushy about it but being from the Detroit area, I grew up on Motown and Stevie was definitely a big part of that. My goal with the record was to illustrate the joy and vibrancy of the album in a way that was retro and modern at the same time.
And I guess it paid off because I got first place this time around! Hurrah! Thanks, Stevie!
Illustration for baby cards. Congratulations on your little monster.
My second place Deathmatch Poster.
I’m number two! I’m number two!
LINES. Made of lines. And arrows. Made of lines. Together they form lines.
