THE ICE CREAM SANDWICH TECHNIQUE
welcome to the ice cream sandwich technique. a method i dreamed up one evening when i was shifting and realized: what if we thought of ourselves as ice cream? what if shifting wasn’t about forcing or fighting but about melting, about becoming so deliciously soft and heavy that you simply sink into your dr the way ice cream sinks into cookies? picture this: ice cream by itself is wobbly. it’s soft. it melts and conforms to whatever shape you place it in. now imagine your dr as a warm cookie. cookies are solid, steady, and structured. they give ice cream a place to live, a shape to fall into. the best part is cookies don’t squash the ice cream. they just hug it. they hold it. and in that holding, the ice cream finds a home, a new form, a whole new treat. that’s exactly how this shifting method feels.
you’re the ice cream—soft, heavy, melty. your current bed, is the bottom cookie: steady, holding you safely from below. your dr is the top cookie: warm, protective, gently pressing down until you melt into it, filling every little crevice until you become one delicious sandwich.
ᯓ step one: lie down and make yourself comfortable. you don’t need to sit in a lotus pose or do anything stiff. you’re ice cream. ice cream doesn’t balance on edges, it spreads out, relaxes, takes up space. so lie down in your bed and let yourself sink.
ᯓ step two: soften your body. this is where the meditation part comes in. but don’t get scared off by that word. you don’t need to chant or clear your mind perfectly. just… melt. imagine your body becoming heavy and creamy, like a scoop of vanilla left out in the sun. your arms, legs, and torso slowly losing their sharpness. no need to hold yourself up. just imagine your body dripping into the mattress, like the way ice cream drips down the side of a cone. notice your muscles softening. notice your breath slowing. ice cream doesn’t rush.
ᯓ step three: acknowledge the bottom cookie underneath you, your bed is the first cookie. it’s not your dr, it’s your current reality, the sturdy cookie that’s been holding you all along. don’t fight it. don’t try to push away from it. just acknowledge it. sink deeper into it.
ᯓ step four: invite the top cookie (your dr) imagine your dr lowering down toward you like the second cookie. it carries the exact energy of your dr, warmth, sweetness, love, home. take a deep inhale, and picture that cookie floating down closer. on your exhale, imagine it pressing into you, not heavy, not crushing. just a soft, warm hug. like the moment the lid goes on a box, sealing everything safe inside.
ᯓ step five: melt into your dr. this is the sweetest part. imagine your ice cream body melting into every crevice of the top cookie. feel yourself seep into its cracks, its edges, its spaces. you’re becoming one with your dr, filling it with your essence. you don’t have to rush. ice cream takes its time. it melts slowly, naturally, inevitably. picture your dr wrapping around you like a blanket, like warm cookie dough fresh out of the oven, while you sink deeper and deeper, becoming softer and softer.
this technique/method is about remembering that you’re not forcing anything. you’re just softening until the universe wraps around you, until your dr becomes the cookie that holds you perfectly in place.
