And I’m just gonna say as someone who has given out advice before (probably against the interests of the association) that all you prospies should be true to yourselves!! Why would you want them to accept only a feigned attempt at a “more impressive” version of yourself (there isn’t one)? Even if you've never picked up an 'academic journal', even if cosmo is your holy grail of choice- Let them read you, for you.
