SWEDLEY JOTHAN -- whose money and life The Shadow saves.
- #098: The Third Shadow
Gibson loves dropping names like Swedley Jothan as if that's just a name people have.
Such dour thoughts disturbed Lamont Cranston as he stared from his window at the city lights. Never before had he advertised himself as target for murder without getting prompt results. That this should happen in Chicago of all cities was discouraging, indeed.
-#323: The Magigals Mystery
"I've been trying all day to get murdered and not one attempt has been made on my life" :,(
The Shadow, half off his footing, thrust out a hand to stop his fall. His fist encountered a loose door. The barrier swung inward. Slipping, The Shadow tumbled sidewise into a long, narrow linen closet.

One of my favorite things in these books is when Shads' luck craps out and the environment just goes 'actually fuck you'.
Currently re-reading 111: City of Crime and I'm pretty sure it has no agents so I'm not terribly invested, but it does have Theo D. Shaw and I will never get over that fucking alias

This is my first Lady Molly of Scotland Yard story and it’s already everything I could have ever asked for.
Lady Molly lives with her friend, confidant, and partner Mary (our first-person narrator) and their faithful servant Jane. Mary refers very early to her “intimate association” with “my dear lady” -- in fact, any time she refers to Lady Molly by anything other than Lady Molly, it’s “my dear lady”. Even when she’s annoyed at Molly for making her deal with two troublesome clients.
