The first newspaper to publish a crossword puzzle was the New York World on December 21, 1913. By the 1920's they were so popular that the New York Public Library started to complain:

They have an iOS app but not an android app, but honestly the site is good enough I've never been sad about the lack of an app.

After Remus sent Sirius that third crossword puzzle he had made especially for Sirius (and James and Peter chewed Sirius out for being "a tease") it was all over.
Today the word ''oak'' was included in my crossword puzzle, and the clue for it was ''Acorn Maker''.
